" Officials Arrange for After-dusk After-dusk Flights Over the City. j BY far the most important announce-' ment the officials of the Utah State Fair board have ever made regarding the amusements programme pro-gramme for the annual State fair in j Walt Lake, is the news given out yes- ; terday that the thousands of State fair visitors this year will for the first time have an opportunity to see a world-famous world-famous aviator ascend in his aeroplane high into the blackness of the night above the fait grounds and loop the loop I in his aeroplane four consecutive times I before he reaches the earth. It is doubtful if in all the world of aviation there has been developed a more sensational and daring aviator than Gertson. ' President J. G. McDonald and the officials of-ficials of the State Fair association have worked hard for wueks to rlosc negotiations negotia-tions that will insure Gertson "s daily and nightly nights over the State fair grounds, and in securing his signature to the contract they have undoubtedly taken steps to assure Salt Lakers aud their thousands of State fair visitors a most sensational attraction during the eight days of the fair, from September 3d' to October 7, inclusive. Wonderful Sight. Jt is said bv those who have witnessed Gortson "s exhibition in Chicago and other eastern cities recently that the, spectacle of this man, ascending a mile; high into the blackness of the night ; and then releasing a flood of fireworks, attached to different portions of his machine, ma-chine, while he comes hurtling down ; through space, his machine turning over and over in gigantic loop-the-loops, can never be forgotten by those who witnessed wit-nessed it. Gertson uses a military trartor biplane, bi-plane, with a gyro motor of 100 horsepower. horse-power. It was onlv four weeks ago, on Tuesday Tues-day night, August 1, lHlfi, that Gertson electrified thousands of spectators in ( 'hi en go, when he made a sensational tlight from the polf grounds at Lincoln; park, on the Inko front, in his biplane. Gertson made his start about 30 : o'clock at niirht, with the wind blowing! a gule of thirty-live miles per hour. He shof up quickly in order to avoid i air pockets, and after he hail gone up ; above wind squalls, made a steady drive over Chicago for half a mile to the west. His machine was alight with fireworks and attracted the attention of thousands of people. After reaching an altitude of 400 feet Gertson pressed a hufon which released re-leased a Niagara falls of fire which shot out from the rear of his biplane in spectacular showers, and then he began makinir clean cut and smooth turns downward, after which he rode upside down for a time above the upturned faces of thousands of breathless people peo-ple and then volplaned toward the golf grounds, where he alighted like a bird among t he red-fire signals. Spectacular Feature. One of the most spectacular features of this flight was the fact that the seven-cylinder motor only worked on four cylinders a good share of the time, this tending to make the flight extremely dangerous. The newspapers-of newspapers-of Chicago shared with aviation experts ex-perts who wit inscd the spectacle in declaring that this was the most daring and spectacular night flight' ever made in this country bv a hiplnne. It is a spectacle of this nature that visitors to the Ctah State fair will witness each afternoon and niht of the fair, from September to October 7, when Gertson ascends for his re ma rk-ablc rk-ablc expeditions. The educational feature of the fair 8 re well under way, and the public will find the grounds and building far j more beautiful and attractive than ever j before. I'lar.s have been worked out bv Presi- ! dent d. G. MePouald, who ha' cha rue j of grounds and buildings, looking to the I beaut iticat ion of both, and with the new j departments in litis vear's exposition, and the interest hundreds of exhibitors! are showing at present, there can he j little quet ion hut that every depa rt-ment rt-ment of the Ctah State fair this year will be Ailed to overflowing. Supervisor Xeimer of the speed de-pa de-pa rtinent is already perfect in a a programme pro-gramme for the dailv horse races, to he held in front of the grandstand, and a fine list of entries has been received from horsemen all over the west. Secretary Horace Ensign of the State Fair association has his preparations for the active operation of the fair further along than ever before, and with the facilities provided in his new quarters at the state capitol all work pertaining to the State fair is moving along rapidly. rap-idly. Every indication points to one of the heaviest attendances at this year's State fair of many seasons. |
