Los Angeles An-geles was without a mayor tonight and probably will be until Tuesday, when it ! is expected the city council will elect a successor to Charles K. Sebastian, vho ; resigned today, assigning ill health as the reason, ilia resignation followed ; newspaper attacks which resulted in the , mayor tiling charges of criminal libel , against two persons. Claire Snively, : who succeeded Sebastian as chief of , police and who was long; his secretary, j announced today that he will tender his j resignation to the new mayor. I Martin F. Betkouski, president of I the council, was notified today by tho city attorney to hold himself iu readiness readi-ness to assume the responsibilities of I mayor in event of an emergency. "During his campaign for office while chief ot police Sebastian was indicted jointly April 6, 1915, with Mrs. Lillian Pratt of L03 Angeles on a charge of contributing to the dependency of Edith Serkin, a minor. They were subsequently subse-quently acquitted. Prior to the return of the indictments Sebastian issued an open letter in which he charged a clique of politicians were trying to drive him from political life. At the same time Mrs. Pratt made a statement that "Mrs, Martha Olivera, her sister, had offered her $800 to get Sebastian." The investigation was punctuated by sharp exchanges between beoastian and his associates and the district attorney 's office, and led to the indictment of Sebastian Se-bastian and his attorney, Earl Rogers, on a charge of attempted intimidation of a grand jury. This indictment was dismissed after the acquittal of Sebastian Sebas-tian and Mrs. Pratt of the dependency charge. Sebastian took the stand in his own defense and made a complete denial of the charges. Ho completed his testimony testi-mony the day preceding the primary, which was held May 4, 1915. On the night before the primary two shots were fired into the window of the mayor's home. Sebastian was elected mayor June 1 over his opponent, F. J, Whiffen, by a majority of about 5000 votes. |
