President Woodrow Wilson was last night offered the services of a Syrian legion, to be mobilized in Salt Lake at j once, to help fight the Mexicans. j A telegram to the president, proffer-1 ing 200 Syrians who saw service in the; British army in Egypt, was dispatched : by George J. Ilauna, a Salt Laue mer-! chant, who was formerly a captain of . Syrian troops in Alexandria. j ""The men are all seasoned fighters; and we all want to go to the front under the srars and stripes," said Captain ilauna iast night. 1 Following is the telegram sent to i President Wilson: His Excellency, Woodrow Wilson, President of the United States, Washington, D. C. In behalf of 200 Syrians, all of them seasoned fighters who saw service uuder me m the British j army in Alexandria, Egypt, I offer you the services of this body of men to serve our country, the tTnit- j ed States, in Mexico or wherever j you choose to send us. We would I go as a unit and are ready now. We await your orders. CAPTAIN" GEO. J. HA NX A, Formerly of Syrian Troops in British Brit-ish Egypt. Captain Hanna said that his men wanted only the authorization from the president and tho equipment to be ready to start for the border. One hundred hun-dred and twenty-five of them, he said, live in Salt Lake; twenty-five are in Pocatello and fifty in Portland. All of them aro eagerly" awaiting an answer to the message sent to the president. The men are all former- soldiers of his Syrian troop in British service in Ep"Tt. Mr. Hanna held a captain's commission under the British government govern-ment in this service and was headquartered headquar-tered at Alexandria. Prior to his British Brit-ish Egyptian experience Captain Hanna saw service in the Turkish army. Captain Hanna and his men. were greatly excited last night by the news of the fighting in Mexico. The captain said he was willing to shut up his grocery gro-cery store and go to the front on a moment's mo-ment's notice, and that his men would be right with him. |
