Show SAYS ALEXANDER IS fflTESTl GAME Scout Bill Neal Thinks Phil Marvel Better Than Walter Johnson. "Better than Walter Johnson." This is Scout Bill NeaTs modest characterization charac-terization of Alexander. "Johnson is noted for his speed," declares Neal, "but it is straightaway speed. His curve ball is the merest excuse; but Alexander, well, his curve ball is as fast as his straight ball and on ordinary out and out speed there's little to choose between him and the great Walter. ' ' This is Alexander's fourth season with the Phillies and his most successful. success-ful. Neal says, however, that Alexander is of value to the Phillies for other things besides pitching. ' ' Alexander never misses a day on the ball field, ,; he says. "Generally a pitcher, after working one day, lays off the next and takes in the game from the grandstand. Not so Alexander. He 's but there in uniform day after day, and when he isn't pitching he is stamping up and down the coaching lines. "Moran appreciates him as a great instructor for the young fellows. He's one of those persons who wants everyone every-one to be as smart as himself. Has pa tie ?ice is wonderful. You could n 't buy .him from the Phillies now for a million dolla rs not for two millions if you consulted the wishes of the fans." |
