Secretary Secre-tary Whitney said the timber construction construc-tion work was inspected yesterday and pronounced in good condition. Tonight's accident occurred less ban a mile from that of Wednesday, when the superstructure of the new subway at Seventh avenue and Twentv-fifth street collapsed, causing seven deaths. lie NEW IK SUBWAY DISASTER NEW YORK, Sept. 25. One death and the injury of three other persons resulted from the caving in of the street over the new subway in Broad way near Thirty-eighth street tonight. An unidentified woman was caught in the falling debris and died later in a hospital. The other injured were men. The police and firemen continued their searca for several workmen reported missing. The "accident occurred a few blocks from the heart of the theater district, shortly before 8 o'clock. Broadway was crowded with people. The weakening of supports in the subway, sub-way, due to weight of traffic, is believed be-lieved to have caused the superstructure of beams and planking to collapse, making mak-ing a hole about fifty feet long, running run-ning north from fhe west side of Broadway Broad-way at Thirty-eighth street and extending extend-ing about half way across Broadway. The pit was about thirty feet deep. Two of the injured were a man and a woman, passengers in an automobile that was carried into the hole. The other person injured is believed to be a workman. A crowded street car was approaching approach-ing the spot just prior to the cave-in, when the motorman saw the car tracks ahead sag. He applied the brakes in time to prevent the car from being carried car-ried down. At least a score of persons were carried car-ried down with the mass of twisted timbers. tim-bers. Police reserves and firemen were called out. and nearlv a dozen ambulances ambu-lances soon were at tbe scene. The majority of persons were pulled out. of the pit without difficulty Gas and water mains were broken by the cave-in, but the flow was quickly shut off.
