Show NEW YORK SOLDIERS SEEN IN MANEUVERS Demonstration Is Viewed by Thousands and Efficiency of Guardsmen Is Complimented. NTTW YORK, Sept 25. What the soldiers of New York City are capable of in time of war was demonstrated in Van Oortlandt park today, when 10,000 local troops of the New York National guard engaged in maneuvers before many thousands of spectators. Governor Whitman and Governor Walsh of Massachusetts watched the citizen soldiers prove their efficiency. The two governors were received with a salute or seventeen guns from parked artillery, and joined with the spectators in the eager interest displayed in seeing for the first time within the city limits the game of war played with all the paraphernalia of the modem army. The construction of a pontoon bridge serosa the park lake, of a trestle bridge on the field, the explosion of ground mines, the operation of a field wireless outfit, the establishment of a field hospital, hos-pital, and cavalry and machine gun maneuvers were among the features which evoked applause. A sham battle was on the programme this afternoon. |
