Show MINING DIVIDENDS. A modest Item in the' dispatches this morning tells of. the distribution tt n quarterly dividend of $10 by the Calu-mot Calu-mot & Hecla, the great copper mlno of Lake Superior. That Is $10 a year. The stock Is quoted now at $1C0 a r,hare. Tho income to tho buyer is therefore six dollars a year short of ten per cent. The Calumet & Hecla dividend looks big; II. sounds we'll to speak of a ten dollar dividend each quarter. And It is strong. And yet it is a poor return on the Investment compared with the regular dividends paid by Utah minus. Take the Daly West, for instance whose stock Is quoted at around $23 a share, and which pays forty cents a month dividend, being $1.S0 a year, or more than twenty per cent on the investment. Or, the. Silver King, quoted at about $51 per share, and which pays two-thirds of a dollar every month with the regularity regu-larity of clock work, or eight dollars a year, which is practically flftecn per cent on the Investment., And other mines might also be favorably favor-ably mentioned in this connection, but these are the most conspicuous. So that there Is no occasion for any Utalui to envy the investors In Calumet & Hecla stock; for we have right here at home, mining stocks whichare far belter investments than is its stock; and there arc opportunities on the side to take prospects and develop them Into In-to mines, which will yield fabulous percentages per-centages on the Investment, and which for safety only demand the sami sort of business sense and prudence Hhat men exercise In other business pursuits.. |
