Show 1 ITS USUAL SATURDAY Traders on Wall Street Close Up Their Contracts I I REVIEW OF THE WEEK EXHIBITING THE MANIPULA IONS OP THE MARKET Weeks Net Gains Beduced Anticipated Antici-pated Court Decision On Maximum Freight CaseSugar the Center of Strength YesterdayCheap Money Strength of Bonds New York Dec 11 Todays stock I market reflected the tendency of professional pro-fessional traders to close up contracts at the end of a week rather than keep them open over Sunday and also a natural reaction towards a higher level after yesterdays relapse in prices There was some bear pressure against I prices at the opening Manhattan being driver down 1 and Sugar yielding a point after a small gain But this failed I fail-ed to induce any large selling and so it became apparent that yesterdays liquidation had run its course for the present The bull contingent was prepared II pre-pared to offer rigorous support on weak stocks and large buying orders for the account CENTER OF STRENGTH Sugar was the center of the markets strength and the firm resistance of prices drove the bears to cover There I Was a noticeable sluggishness of price I movement in some of the most promi Ktnt shares in the market Sugar was I quite buoyant and rose to within about 2 points of the highest of the week closing with a net gain of 111 Its range for the day was 3 points FREIGHT RATE CASE Besides the technical causes for the rise the market was aided by the recurring re-curring possibility that a decision maybe I may-be handed down by the supreme court on Monday in the Nebraska maximum I I freight rate case Wall street traders ill railroad securities maintain an abid irg faith that when this decision does I coma it will be in favor of the railroads rail-roads and the fact that Monday is decision de-cision day with the supreme court has made Saturday a day of timidity with the shorts ever since the decision has been pending with the court in session ses-sion Assertions were also given consideration consid-eration that there is a growing possibility possi-bility of favorable action by congress on bills to authorize pooling and against ticket scalping and this added to the strength of the railroads Northern North-ern Pacilic preferred enjoyed the benefit bene-fit of the first dividend declared yesterday yes-terday by the directors since the reorganization re-organization of the company and of the favorable statement of earnings given out at the same time BANK STATEMENT The slight recessions from the best at the close were probably induced by the bank statement The large shrinkage shrink-age in the surplus is due not alone to the raising of the legal reserve limit by the heavy increase in deposits but by an actual decrease in cash of 1012700 The items of loans and deposits with the large increase shown are affected by the further payments on account of the Union Pacific sale There has been a movement of currency to St Louis and New Orleans during the week which probably accounts for the decrease in cash The price of the U S new 4s was bid up per cent and of the old 4s registered t registeredNE NET GAINS REDUCED The weeks net gains have been reduced re-duced as was the case last week by the profittaking of professional operators opera-tors on Friday The manipulation of a the market by the large interest which has embarked upon a bull campaign was very obvious during the week and strenuous efforts were made to keep the course of prices upward by vigorous vigor-ous support at weak points and by inciting sharp rises in individual stocks to sustain the general list Some of the reports set afloat to effect this latter purpose contradicted themselves in the course of the week and nothing could then prevent a decline in the price of the particular stock with a consequent unsettling effect on the market Thus Sugar was pushed up to 145 > on reports re-ports that an extra dividend on the I stock was certainly forthcoming and the declaration of only the regular div ident drove the price down below 140 U P WEAKNESS Union Pacific was persistently weak on account of the presidents order that the government should qualify as a bidder at the Kansas Pacific sale and the subsequent request for a postponement l postpone-ment of the sale The weeks returns of railroad earnings earn-ings have made a remarkably favorable showing Railroads in the south and southwest have shown especially heavy increases and their stocks have shown the largest gains in price CHEAP MONEY Money has continued cheap and is easily obtainable and there have been offerings of Chicago money on time loans in this market Notwithstanding the ease of the local money rates and in spite of a sharp stiffening of discount dis-count rates in London and Berlin the foreign exchange market has shown increasing weakness Actual rates for sterling exchange have fallen 34c during dur-ing the week due to the offerings of bills against grain and cotton and to an abatement of the investment demand de-mand for long sterling Chicago credits are reported to be loaned in Berlin at 4 per cent to the extent of several million dollars The abundance of grain lulls which has served to weaken exchange ex-change is said to be due to the operations opera-tions of the bull clique in pushing ex sports of wheat STRENCTH OF BONDS f The strength and activity of the bond market during the week has been even snore remarkable than in the stock market High grade bonds have been thoroughly thor-oughly gone over and lifted almost to prohibitive prices the government bonds rising with the others The demand de-mand has shifted to middle grade bonds which have shown material advances ad-vances Speculative issues have also moved in some power stocks but are 1 higher on the weak U S new 4s have > been > bid up during the week the I old 4s registered the 3s and the old 4s coupon lI I MONEY MARKET Money on call nominally 12 percent per-cent prime London financial cablegram The stock markets here Were rather better in tone owing to the smoothness I in carrying over contagoes that had been expected It is anticipated that the general sentiment next week will show a small account but money will be dearer Americans were deareron I realizations here in anticipation of 3the settlement Copper shares were dull but steadier CHICAGO WHEAT Peeling XTervous December Grains at the Close Chicago Dec nThe speculative trade in wheat was light but the feeling feel-ing continues nervous The December clique was thought to have picked up most of the offerings enough possibly to replace the amount sold yesterday at much higher prices to check the I j advance which had been started on the action of the shorts The movement I of wheat which is under way for this market tended to relieve to some extent ex-tent the apprehension of the shorts and there was less urgency in the demand I de-mand from that interest It was currently cur-rently reported that wheat was coming I in good volume from Minneapolis and 300000 bushels of Duluth No1 northern north-ern on the way to Buffalo had been stopped by telegraph orders and turned back to Chicago where the price would net the owners 5c per bushel profit It is known that there are large I amounts of wheat elsewhere only waiting for the price here to reach a I figure which will warrant putting it on the cars for Chicago and the bears hope to see it come in on the floor so as to seriously embarrass the clique to take care of it It was the belief I that such was the case which encouraged encour-aged the short selling Mr Leiter is I credited with the statement that however how-ever much wheat the clique would get I it would be promptly shipped but the bears looked upon this as a bluff In December very little was done but I any offer to sell depressed the price Ic a bushel and a bid for 1000 bushels I was sufficient to correspondingly advance I ad-vance it While December in the end showed a gain of Ic for the day January I Jan-uary showed lc loss I Corn opened easy at a decline for May and December but later May rd t covered and closed at yesterdays figures fig-ures December
