Show I DfATH Of GA ARD1NEE G HU UIIDAD I WELL KNOw AMONG SCIENTISTS SCIEN-TISTS AND FINANCIERS I One of the Chief Promoters of the Bell Telephone President of Na tion l Geographical Society Washington Dec 11G rdiner G Hubbard a director the Bell Telephone I Tele-phone company and well known to public men scientists and financiers died at Twin Oaks his suburban residence res-idence early this morning His death was due to a complication of diseases and to age He has been in poor health for some time but it wa not until yesterday that his condition condi-tion became alarming Mr Hubbard was of New England ancestry and his progenitors had occupied a prominent place in the history of the commonwealth common-wealth of Massachusetts He was born in Boston in 1822 and graduated from Dartmouth in 1841 He then entered the law school at Cambridge and prac ticed law in Boston until 1873 when he removed to Washington to secure a milder climate He early became in terested in the Bell telephone and in 1879retired from the practice of law to devote himself to its interest He was the controlling spirit in its financial affairs during the next five years Af ter it a introduced successful In this country he crossed to the old world and organized the international oriental ori-ental and other companies He secured Important concessions from the Russian government and installed a splendid system in the empire of the czar His next important service for the company was in connection with the celebrated Berliner patent which he so managed as to prolong greatly the Bell com panys control of the field Prior to coming to Washington he had been connected with several important im-portant enterprises of Cambridge Mass and also had taken an active interest in deaf mute education his daughter losing her hearing a the result re-sult of a severe illness He was appointed ap-pointed by President Grant as a special commissioner to report on railroad mail transportation He was an earnest and persistent advocate of a postal telegraph tele-graph system under government control con-trol He was president of the National Geographic society first vice president of the American Union to promote oral instruction of the deaf and of the American Association of Inventors and Manufacturers He leaved a valuable estate j |
