Show A WORTHLESS ASSET Bill Providing For the Extermination of the Seal Herd Washington Dec Representative Jchnson of North Dakota is preparing a bill providing for the complete extermination I ex-termination of the seal herd of Bering sea I is on the lines of the bill proposed pro-posed last year by Representative Dingley but is much more brief and makes extermination unconditional whereas Mr Din leys measure provided pro-vided extermination as an alternative aleratve if pelagic sealing was not stopped Mr Johnson says the recent Bering sea negotiations have further demonstrated demon-strated the impossibility of stopping seal poaching The seals are yielding the government nothing he says as the exclusive privilege of taking seals granted by the government has yielded only a few thousand dollars since 1890 Meantime Mr Johnson points out the pqvernment has spent hundreds of thousandsof I snent in commissions I and in maintaining a patrol of ships in Bering sea He says it has been amply demonstrated that the seals are a I worthless asset and that their extermination exter-mination would be in the interest of peace among nations and economy for the United States I |
