Show i PROVO DIAN AT WASHINGTON I I I Mr Kellogg Says the Mormons AreS I II Are-S Sensible and Fair Washington Post The town of I Provo Utah in which I live said Mr I X M Kellogg at the Ebbitt is overwhelmingly over-whelmingly Mormon in its citizenship the Gentiles comprising not over 20 percent per-cent of the entire population As an I illustration of the fair dealingand liberal I lib-eral sentiment of the Mormon people I can give you no better instance than I the way they have treated their fellow citizens of different religious faith Every school director in the town is a Mormon and the board could easily find enough of their own sect to fill every teachers place in the public schools OwIng to the dull times of late years there has been a great demand de-mand for these places but instead of favoring their own exclusively the Mormons have never failed to choose a larger per cent of Gentile teachers than would be due the Gentile element on a numerical basis of citizenship This I believe is really handsomer conduct than our people would display if the conditions were reversed If we had 80 per cent of the population it would be an easy guess that pretty close on 100 per cent of the teachers would be Gentiles In other ways the Mormons show their good sense This year a non artisan ar-tisan ticket was gotten out in the municipal campaigns and it was gen emily considered to have its inspiration I inspira-tion from the Mormon church This made the Gentile element restless and suspicious for among them the idea of the church being a factor in politics is of course distasteful Before longhoA ever the fact developed that many leading Mormons were strongly opposed to the ticket and pretty soon they were as much divided in its support as the rest of the voters I have been opposed to them often and have talked plainly to them in public meetings but I cheerfully cheer-fully bear testimony to the many virtues vir-tues and excellent conduct of the Mormon I Mor-mon population of Utah |
