Show Stairta Positions? By KEITH DUNCAN KAYSVILLE Coach Mike Gardner made it perfectly perfect-ly clear early in this young basketball bas-ketball year that any one of the nine seniois that make up the Davis Dart roster had a clear shot at making the starting five. TWO OF ihcm, Doug Wehr-li Wehr-li and Troy Anderson, took ' him very seriously. Being a starter for Davi; is something they don't stop thinking about. Because of Doug's performance perform-ance in last Friday's contest with Ogden he was one of five players in the starting line-up against Ben Lomond last Tuesday. Tues-day. Anderson will probably get his shofToo. "BUT EVEN though I'm working hard to become a starter, star-ter, I respect Coach Gardner and his decisions. Afterall, he is doing what is neccessary for Davis to become a winner. "With nine seniors around, I've got to realize that only five will start. But I know if I'm not one of them then I've got to be ready to substitute when called upon. "IT ALL boils down to nlav- l-r- f T-ivj -'!" y i' I TROY ANDERSON AND DOUG WEHRLl that didn't work out. "At first I didn't like the idea of moving because of my senior year, my friends and the fact 1 liked playing for Bountiful. Bounti-ful. I was real concerned about it at first," said Wehrli. BUT MR. Wehrli talked with the coaches at Davis and then went back to converse with coaches at Bountiful. That helped a bit but it wasn't until summer prep league action ac-tion that Doug was fully confident confi-dent about the move. "I went into the summer baseball league playing for Davis and 1 liked it. Everyone was friendly and came up to me introducing themselves. It was then I felt good about my decision," he said. "AND I haven't regretted the decision for one moment," said Wehrli. "It's everything that I hoped it would be," he said. From the first day Doug became be-came interested in sports it has been his father who has provided pro-vided the extra punch to keep going. AND ONE of the highlights in both of their sports careers was the Dart victory over Bountiful late last football season. sea-son. Doug called it "unforgettable." "unforgett-able." . "It was a game I had psyched myself right out in. I had a lot of good frends like Rob Eggett and others that we were playing against. It was tense all the way but it was fun, too. "I CAN still remember talking talk-ing to Rob when Todd Smith got hurt. He said jokingly that I was a target for the Bountiful players and that they were going to put me out. But I pointed back at him and said it was someone on his side that was going out," remembers Wehrli. Wehrli's two interceptions certainly added a bit of spice to the night and despite beating his old teammates he walked away from the game with the same friendships as he'd had before. ANDERSON DIDN'T consider con-sider himself very athletic before be-fore his sophomore season. In fact he didn't play football until un-til 10th grade. But basketball, if anything, has always been a favorite. His grandfather, Don Smith, once played at Davis High and all through the past football season sea-son was on hand to rally for the Darts and support his grandson. TWO OF Troy's most prominent prom-inent moments in Dart sports were the '80-81 basketball victory vic-tory over Viewmont and the prep league win over Bountiful this past summer. "Viewmont had beaten us twice before that year, but beating Kyle Morrell and the boys in (lie state tournament was the sweetest victory we could have had . ' ' said Anderson. AFTER HKiH school Troy plans going on a mission for the LDS Church with some college experience either before be-fore or after. He might also get a little more involved in chariolt racing rac-ing which has become a family affair around the Anderson family. In the years he has been involved. Troy has he-come he-come quite capable in the sport. FOR DOl'G, he plans to play some more spons in college. col-lege. Baseball seems to appeal to him more than anything. Obtaining a degree in chemical engineering while playing ball w ill also be a big goal in his life. ing as a team. We'll be a good team if we'll respect Coach Gardner's judgement and play the role he gives us," said Anderson. Wehrli felt much the same way. He commented, "I hope to fit in somewhere because I'd like to contribute. But the main theme is to win as a team. We can't expect just one player to pull us through." WEHRLI HAS played some forward and mostly guard in early season workouts and games. His ball handling ability abil-ity and passing talents give the Darts an extra threat on offense. "As freshman we didn't win regularly," said Anderson of this year's group of basketball seniors. "But as time has progressed prog-ressed we have won more and more until now we're a little used to it. "I THINK we'll be real competitive com-petitive this year if we can blend our talents together. That means specifically working work-ing with great players like Brian Taylor. He knows as well as we do that he can't do it alone. That is what is neat about ab-out it," said Anderson. Besides basketball, Anderson Ander-son starred last fall as a receiver receiv-er and defensive back with the football team. During the spring he goes out for track and because of the fun he had last sumner in prep baseball, he might even try out for the baseball base-ball team. "WHEN I WAS a junior I remember the coaches saying to the seniors that they ought to respect their senior year because be-cause that was it. But I didn't think about it that much then or take them serious. "But now I am a senior, what they say is true. This is it. We'd better enjoy it and get the most of it," said Anderson. HAVING NOT won in the 4-A football quarterfinals dampened dam-pened some player's spirits, including Troy's "When we were losing to Alta in football I was making a resolution to work as hard as I could in basketball. bas-ketball. I also didn't want the same thing to happen twice," he said. For Wehrli, this is the first and last season to perform in a Dart uniform. He performed his sophomore and junior years at Bountiful High. "MY DAD (Jerry) likes the Kaysville area and that had a lot to do with our moving here last Summer. He would have really liked to have gone to Idaho where he grew up, but |
