Show Football Stars Earn All-State By DAVE W IGHAM BOUNTIFUL Secretly the goal of every high school football player in the state is to be honored for their efforts throughout the year. The ultimate ulti-mate goal would have to be to earn an all-state status. FOR EIGHT local players, here in Davis County, their goal was achieved this past week with the naming of the all-State team by the press. All eight of the players richly deserve de-serve the honor of being selected to the elite squad. Bountiful placed five players play-ers on the teams, four first teamers and one second team recipient. Davis had the other three players honored with two first team selections and one second team selection. HEADING THE list of players play-ers in Bountiful's big bruising fullback, Rob Eggett. On the year Rob gained over 1400 yards rushing the football averaging over five yards every ev-ery time he touched the pigskin. pigs-kin. According to his headman this was easily a school record re-cord for the big senior runner. Coach Paul Waite simply calls Eggett the best he's had at the school. Three other Bountiful players play-ers were selected for their defensive de-fensive efforts as the Braves were considered one of the strongest defensive teams in the state. During the state tournament tour-nament they gave up 23 points in four games to some of the top clubs in the state. LINEBACKER Steve Had-ley Had-ley was first team. Coach Waite calls him the most physical phy-sical player he's ever coached. Steve was Mr. Everything for the Braves, but it was at linebacker line-backer that opposing teams will remember. He was a hitter in every sense of the word, and most teams chose to run away from his side. Steve wasn't the only linebacker line-backer from the Braves, though, as senior, Alan Schwab was also a first team selection. Alan used his speed and quickness from his middle-backer middle-backer spot to the fullest. Coach Waite called him "pound for pound the best player in the state." Alan also received a lot of votes for his play as offensive guard. BIG CHRIS Badger. Captain Cap-tain Crunch, was picked as a defensive lineman, although, he could have been selected as offensive line as well. Chris was noted on defense for his heavy pass rush, he's got good foot quickness for a lineman. Some college scouts feel Chris could be the sleeper of the state this year and many of them are looking at him. Jay McCaan was the fourth Bountiful player named all-State all-State both as a defensive end and punter. Jay played a solid end for the Braves but it will be his punting in the state tournament tourna-ment that caught the eye of the voters and college coaches. Jay averaged over 40 yards a punt in the state event and that has the college folds drooling. KIRK STOREY is the lone Davis player on the first team of one paper, while Spencer DeGraw joined him on another. Both are first team selections. Storey was the type of player that always got his job done and did it well. An excellent blocker who was one of the big keys to the Davis double wing. Although smaller than most, he faced Kirk more and held his own, in fact, he dominated most opponents. Spence simply had a great year as a back. Not only from his wingback spot for the Darts but as a kick return specialist too. It was his run back of a kick that killed Woods Cross in their battle. It was Spence that almost single handedly beat Bountiful. A speedster who wasn't afraid to hit people. CAREY BLOOD was the other Dart player honored by the papers. Carey was another standout lineman for the Davis side. Despite his lack of size, Carey was very aggressive in his play. He didn't back down from anyone. His quickness was his main asset along with downright meanness. |
