In second day action Davis knocked off Grantsville 62-44 62-44 while Spanish Fork handed Bountiful a 42-21 loss. Teri Hartley led the Darts with 13 with teammate Gwen Greenhalgh adding II. FOR THE Braves Shana Knudsen, Thersa Liata and Shauna Youngblood all played well. The girls now gear up for their league play, which starts in January, with a few more oractice games. FOR THE Lancers the road to the finals saw them knock of Davis and then Woods Cross. Opening night the Lancers handed David a 47-36 setback on the 1 5 point effort of Korry n Wiese. Then in the semi the Lancers disposed of Woods Cross 52-30 behind the 17 points of both Wiese and Angee Gibby. In other opening round action ac-tion the Viewmont team came out blazing to hand Spanish Fork a 52-18 shellacking. In that battle Ballantyne contributed contri-buted 15, Shauna Lemon 10, Karne Stott six and Denise Draper, six. WOODS CROSS had a great battle in their first outing narrowly nar-rowly beating Grantsville 49-45. 49-45. It was a close game throughout with the score de-dlocked de-dlocked at 30 after three periods. Down the stretch the Cats showed some great poise at the foul line hitting on 7 of LISA BALLANTYNE led the Vikes with 12 points followed fol-lowed by Shauna Lemon 10 and Stephanie Smith 7. For the losing Cats, junior Maren Hansen Han-sen was top producer with 16 while Tori Weight added ten. Davis streaked out to a 22-4 lead after one period and from there on it was just a matter of how many points the Darts wanted to score on the Dons. Coach Ann Avondet used the game to good advantage getting get-ting her bench some valuable playing time. Julie Peterson and Diana Peterson both poured in 14 points for the winners win-ners with Allison Horseley adding 12 and Tracie Belt along with Kathy Lymna both getting nine. CLEARFIELD GOT to the finals with wins over Bountiful and Viewmont. In their opening open-ing round 51-26 win over the Braves, Jennifer Beene was high scorer with a fine 20 point effort. Fellow Falcon Michelle Kelsey added 18. For the Bountiful side that is on the upswing under first year coach Jill Avery, Shana Knudsen had ten and Gaylene Haacke six. Then in the semifinals the Falcons used another 20 point game from Beene to sweep past Viewmont 44-38. In that battle Kelsey and Tillman both added nine for the winners while the Vikings were led by Lisa Ballantyne's 20 points. By DAVE WICHAM WOODS CROSS Clearfield Clear-field held off a valiant effort from Layton to claim a 39-38 victory and first place in the Davis County Invitational basketball bas-ketball tournament last week. IT W AS sweet revenge for Coach Margo Jones and her gals as a year ago the Lancers hit a last second shot to down the Falcons by a single point in this same tournament. This time the bounce of the ball fell in the Clearfield direction direc-tion as the last second shot by the Lancers fell short. With seventeen seconds left in the game Layton took control of the ball via a Clearfield turnover. turnov-er. The Lancers worked the clock down to the two second mark and let loose with their shot only to see it fall short of it's mark. LAYTON DIDN'T help their cause any at the charity line as the Lancers could only connect con-nect on two of their 15 attempts. It was true team effort for Clearfield in claiming this title. Senior Jennifer Beene led the Falcons in the finals with 10 points while Michelle Kelsey, Jodi Tillman and Elise Ipson all added 7 for the win. Korryn Wiese was top scorer scor-er for the Lancer side with ten points while Kelly Beckman added nine and Joyce Helton another eight. , IN OTHER action Viewmont View-mont nipped Woods Cross 47-32 47-32 to capture third place with Davis humiliating Spanish Fork 77-37 to claim fifth spot. At one point in their game the Wildcats of Woods Cross pulled within two, at 32-30, of the Vikings but then the Viewmont View-mont ladies scored eight quick unanswered points to put the game out of reach. In the final period the Vikes outscored their rivals 13-2 to secure the victory. |
