Show Braves Second At Brighton; Woods Cross Splits Duals By DAVE WIGHAM BOUNTIFUL Wrestling teams around the area had a busy week last week with Bountiful leading the way being involved in a big two day tournament at Brighton High. The Braves placed second in the team title, behind a powerful power-ful host Brighton club, in the eight team event. INDIVIDUALLY the Bountiful Boun-tiful side had three wrestlers claim championships, one claimed second place, three were third and one, fourth. Dave Merrill started things off with a championship effort in the 126 lbs. division. Dave is undefeated thus far on the year and is looking strong for a state title. SENIOR CHRIS Badger also kept his record slate clean with top honors in the 167 lbs. class. Since losing all those pounds from football season, Chris has been stronger with each match. Rob Eggett bounced back from his first loss a week ago to claim top spot in the tough 185 lbs. classification. Rob's coach indicated the quick loss of weight from football drained some of his strength but he appears on his way to building back up. ' SENIOR ALAN Schwab came away with a second place finish in the 155 lbs. division which was one of the toughest in the two day affair. Third place honors went to Dave Smith in the heavyweight class, Brad Avis in the 145 lbs. class and Mo Solari in the 105 lbs. The other Braves in the top four was 98 lb. JeftOlson, who placed fourth. WOODS CROSS meanwhile split last week in dual meets with a 47-15 win over West and then a 30-16 setback to a good Alta club. Alta, you will recall, won the West Invitational a week ago, and is competing in the Viewmont classic this week. For the Cats a total of five people won, or at least drew, both matches while five more wrestlers split on the week. TRENT OVERTON won both matches in his 112 lbs. class with a 3-1 win over Wata-nuki Wata-nuki of West and a 14-6 win over Singleton of Alta. Stew art World knocked off Herrera of West 6-3 then had a great match which ended in a 4-4 draw with Gustafson of Alta. Miland Kofford then won both matches at 138 with a pin over Sanchez of West and 10-4 decision over Baer of Alta. Also a note: it was reported last week that Miland split in his meets with Skyline and Olympus when in fact he won both matches. GORDON PECK was strong in the 155 lbs. class with a pin over Evans of West and a strong 5-2 win over Jimenez of Alta. In the 185 lbs. class the Cats used two different people on the week. In the first meeting senior Matt Harmer came on strong to pin Hall of West while Soderbergof Alta took a 1 1 -Odecision over Brad Pusey . THOSE THAT split were Steve Fultz in the 98 lbs. weight; Craig Keller at 105, Shuldberg at 119, Lindsey at 167 and Rod Clark in the heavyweight division. Kevin Mochizuki and Rod Millward both lost two close matches on the week. |
