Show I FACTS & FIGURES J Milk U nearly perfect food. Although milk average about 87 percent water, it contain! nearly all the basic food materials needed for growth and energy. Milk solids (the amount other than water) contain protein, pro-tein, fat, carbohydrates and ash. A large part of the calcium cal-cium and phosphorous in food eaten by people in the U.S. is in milk. 5H The price most Americans pay for milk is determined by a price system adopted in the Chicago Federal Milk Order in September, 1961. It's known within the dairy industry as the Minnesota-Wisconsin Minnesota-Wisconsin (M-W) milk series, and reflects prices paid farmers in these two states for manufacturing grade milk. Because these two states are the major producers pro-ducers of manufacturing grade milk, the M-W series mirrors prices set throughout the U.S., explains the United Dairy Industry Association. About four acres of farm land, including two acres of pasture, are needed to provide pro-vide the feed for each cow for a year. A cow weighing weigh-ing 1,000 pounds eats in one year the grass from two acres of pasture, 6,300 pounds of silage, 1,700 pounds of grain and 2,730 pounds of alfalfa or clover hay.
