The "Woman Educator of the Year" award was presented pre-sented to Velda Morrow by Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary hon-orary society for women educators. edu-cators. The award was presented pre-sented at a luncheon at Oak-ridge Oak-ridge Country Club Dec. 5. The four Davis County chapters chap-ters of Epsilon, Kappa, Pi and Rho are all members of the Alpha Theta state organization of Delta Kappa Gamma. MRS. MORROW "loves and enjoys teaching" and said "building people is the most important place to be." Velda graduated from BYU in education and several years ago she earned her master's degree from WSC. Her first experience in teaching was special because she went back to that same school in Arizona which she attended as a child. She then taught 'A year in Murray Mur-ray District, six years in Granite Gra-nite District, and is in her 15th year in the Davis District at the Woods Cross Elem. School. Velda is well liked and admired by many of her present and former for-mer students, parents and fellow fel-low teachers. VELDA'S philosophy on teaching is that, "Every one of those little kids needs to do the best he or she can and they need to feel good about themselves. them-selves. I've got to interact with the children I'm not teaching school, I'm teaching children chil-dren one to one. If the kids feel good about themselves they will like to learn. They deserve the best and we're here to see that they get it. Every year is unique because be-cause every child and class is different there is no way to go stale. We use materials differently dif-ferently every year. I have no trouble with discipline I put the responsibility on the students. stu-dents. 1 treat them fairly and expect them to treat me fairly. We work together, we're partners. part-ners. We start friendships that never end even with "problem" "prob-lem" children. A FAMILY that has been "super supportive" of her in her teaching has made Velda very proud. She and her husband hus-band Hunk have four children: . Debbie and Pam who are students stu-dents at BYU; Jackie who is a ' junior at Bountiful High : School: and Rob. in the 8th : grade at the new Mueller Park -Jr. High School. The Morrow family moved to Bountiful : when their oldest was in kin- dergarten and all of the chil- '. dren have attended schools in : the Davis District. ; Mrs. Morrow is very family ; oriented and summer will find j her camping, boating, and : doing all kinds of sporting acti- ' vilies with her family. She is . active in her church and is pre- : sently serving as girl's sports : director for the Bountiful East I Stake. She was past president : of Rho Chapter of Delta Kappa ; Gama. She has been very ac- " lively involved in the Davis Education Association serving ' several years on the executive board of that organization. ' |
