Show Vikes Claim Second At B.E. Braves Knock Off Provo, While Cats Split In Basketball By DAVE WIGHAM BOUNTIFUL All three of the local high schools won at least one ballgame last week as preseason pre-season for the teams came to a close and the squads face season play just around the corner. VIEWMONT LED the charge with a couple of wins in the Box Elder tournament as the Vikes came away with second place in the eight team event. Bountiful won its only battle of the week with a 61-52 win on the road over Provo. Woods Cross started the week off with a win over Brighton but then fell to a good Ogden team, Friday. Big John White was easily the class of the Box Elder affair as the senior forward led his Vikings into the finals. On opening night the Viewmont side had to shake off a pesky Sky View team, coached by former Vike, Clyde Nelson, 56-54. Three Viewmont players, White, Scott Maybe and Reed Fames, all poured in 15 points with White picking up 11 rebounds re-bounds and two blocked shots and Fames dishing out six assists. THEN IN the semifinals the Vikes downed a strong Bonneville club 51-50. It was a close game throughout through-out the first half, but Viewmont outscored their opponents 16-6 in the third period. From then on the Lakers tried desperately to catch up. The Vikes helped out a little missing crucial foul shots down the stretch, but time ran out on them. Again White led the Vikes with 18 points, 14 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Maybe was right behind with 12 points, 12 rebounds and 2 blocks. Although they lost to Roy 66-53, in the finals it was the play of White that had fans talking. In this battle John poured in 22 points, picked off a tournament record 17 rebounds, and blocked five shots. That means for the three games John's stats were 55 points, 32 rebounds and 1 1 blocks. Also, in the final game Fames scored 12 points and handed out nine assists. BOTH WHITE and Scott Maybe were named to the all-tournament team, but many felt John should have won the MVP award. "He was a unanimous choice by the coaches but the people up there decided de-cided it should go to a player on the championship team," noted one Viking coach. Coach Johansen is pleased with the improvement of his club but still notes room for more. "We still have the same problem which is inexperience at the guard spot. The kids realize now they can win the big game with that victory over Bonneville. John was outstanding last week and Scott is right there too. Lynn Anderson played extremely well off the bench and is a help to us." LAST TUESDAY the Wildcats traveled into Bengal Ben-gal country and knocked off their hosts 51-45 in a good ballgame. The Cats jumped all over Brighton in the first period and when the buzzer sounded the visitors were up 13-5. From then on it was an even game with the Cats holding on for the win. Senior guard Greg Gurr led the way with 14 points while junior center Greg Housekeeper added 14. Bruce Bishop used his size and muscle inside to aid the cause with 13. ON FRIDAY, though, the Cats ran into a stubborn Ogden team that came away with the 57-51 win over the Woods Cross bunch. Housekeeper played his best game as a Cat with a 20 point effort. Bishop added nine with senior Richard Johnson another eight. After a week that saw them play five games in seven days the Bountiful club only played once last week. They made the best of that game as they beat a highly regarded Provo side 61-52 on the Bulldogs home-floor, THE BRAVES shot an incredible 60 percent from the floor. In fact, they only missed on 14 field goal attempts all night. "It was a funny game to watch," noted coach Mike Hall. "All the scoring was inside. When the ball was on the perimeter the big people inside were beating each other to death. But as soon as it got inside everyone backed off because of fouls," he joked. Dan Bell had his finest game of the year with 27 points. Lex Brown added 11 and Gary Seljaas 7. "WE FEEL good about where we are right now," added Hall. "We've been playing well against good teams. The pleasing thing is we get balanced scoring. Bell is averaging 17 points, Weight 12, Izatt 10 and Seljaas is right behind them. Plus our bench is play-ing play-ing weHjMid givingJS a lift." |
