Show SPORTS SHORTS If the New York Mets want to make new Manager Mana-ger George Bamberger feel at home, they ought to build a fishing pond in the bullpen at Shea Stadium. Bamberger, you see, if just a down-home, country-type country-type of guy. Here's a sample of his philosophies on life: "Who needs baseball , when you've got what I've got at home a house 30 feet from the water, and the fish are biting?" "If they don't like what I'm doin' in New York, I'll just get on a plane and go home and go fishin' with my grandson." "Don't talk to me about slumps I haven't caught a fish in a long time now that's important stuff." Ever wonder what will happen when World B. Free's basketball skills erode. What will happen to his "All-World" nickname then? L.A. Times columnist Scott Ostler says he'll have to continually revise it until he becomes "1324 Maple St." B. Free. Wilt Chamberlain can't seem to get that monkey off his back. Wilt recently recalled what a great high jumper he was in his younger days. In fact, he said, the only guy who beat him was Charley Dumas, the first man to clear 7 feet. Turns out Dumas had another an-other chief rival in those days. In fact, in one meet, he was tied by the other guy, a fellow by the name of Bill Russell. |
