Whenever you pick up a biology textbook, thumb through a natural history magazine or receive a calendar from a wildlife organization, chances are you will be looking at drawings and paintings executed ex-ecuted by artists skilled in the demanding profession of scientific sci-entific illustration. Beautiful works of art in their own right, they must also conform to the rigid standards of scientific realism. FIFTY SUCH contemporary works from the Guild of Natural Natu-ral Science Illustrators as well as twenty historical examples from the Smithsonian's collections collec-tions can be seen in the exhibition, exhibi-tion, "The Art of Scientific Illustrat ion' It will be on view at the Bountiful-Davis Art Center, 2175 South Main, from Feb. 9 to March 9. Scientific illustrators use a variety of media to tell their story. Pencil and charcoal are among the most popular methods, but oils, gouache and watercolors are also represented repre-sented in the exhibition. The subject matter is diverse and ranges from pictures of larger-than-life insects to delicate shrubs and flowers to intricate medical illustrations. THE WORKS in the exhibition exhibi-tion represent over 30 contemporary contem-porary artists from around the country as well as historical drawings from 1800-1920. The careful attention to detail required re-quired of scientific illustration gives these works a dramatic beauty even as they teach. Anton J. Rasmussen, director direc-tor of the Bountiful Art Center is deeply interested in the connection con-nection and natural interaction between art and science and has based much of his own art work on this concept. Intro ducing the exhibit, Mr. Rasmussen Ras-mussen will give a gallery talk on Saturday. Feb. 9 at 4 p.m. in the main gallery. GALLERY HOURS are Tuesday through Saturday 10-6. 10-6. Sunday 2-5. Closed Mondays Mon-days and holidays. Admission is free. Bountiful Davis Art League is hosting a luncheon on Friday, Fri-day, Feb. 8 at 12:30 p.m. Mr. Rasmussen will be the speaker. |
