Show Davis County School Boord Names Lawrence F. Welling As Superintendent i By TOM Bl'SSELBERG FARMINGTON After two-and-a-half months of meetings and decisionmaking, decision-making, the Davis County Board of Education has named a new superintendent. HE IS Lawrence E. Welling, .a Farmington native who has served as an assistant and deputy de-puty superintendent since 1966. The announcement was made during a special Friday morning session called by the board. More than 100 were in attendance including all principals prin-cipals and other district personnel. per-sonnel. Following an introduction by Board Pres. Lucile Reading and a motion by board member Sheryl Allen, the new superintendent superin-tendent said. "I appreciate your confidence. . .if there's one thing the past years have taught me. if you want to be successful you should look to the past." perhaps inferring the leadership of former Supt. Bernell Wrigley. who resigned Dec. 31 after serving in that post for 20 years. "GREAT THINGS can be done if we work together. It's a team effort." he continued, alluding to the "difficult limes before us" and the financial decisions the district must make due to severe cutbacks in Federal 874 funding for students stu-dents whose parents live or work on base. Along with that, he emphasized empha-sized that growth will continue for D avis District. "We re a growing district and the public desires a good educational program." adding that all district dis-trict employees must put the educational purpose "into proper perspective" remembering remem-bering it is for "the boys and girls." CHANGES WILL have to be looked at. he said, requiring more than just "tightening our belt." "We'll have to pick up our skirts an run" more than has been done in the past. "We hope we'll now be able to take a direct look at the needs in the district." Dr. Welling said emphasizing. "This is an awesome awe-some task but I believe it's a challenge we can meet. It starts with the superintendent and I hope he'll do his part to make Davis County a good place in which to live. work, and to send children to school. "We want to convey our support to the schools, for as important as all of us are. the real job is being done by those who work with the boys and girls." Dr. Welling continued. MRS. READING recalled the time it has taken for the board to choose a successor to Mr. Wrigley. who retired for personal reasons. The board had hoped to choose a new superintendent su-perintendent before his last day. Dec. 31. About 300 announcements were sent to perspective applicants appli-cants throughout the country with "over 50 applications" received. Mrs. Reading said Friday. "We listened to the people of Davis County. Some said we need someone outside the district. We've done both (looked at both options) and we talked to the best qualified." qual-ified." THE BOARD conducted several meetings in north and south ends of the county to obtain citizen input and suggestions sug-gestions for the new superintendent superin-tendent and other desired changes. She noted the board had "looked at Dr. Talbot for a time (Dr. Walter I). Talbot, state superintendent of Public Instruction who backed out several weeks agol and we got our priorities together and when we got all of the notations nota-tions together it was a puzzle. ',.. , THE NEW superintendent is married to the former Kathryn Peterson and they are parents Dr. Lawrence Welling, a veteran of 28 years experience in the Davis School District, Dis-trict, has been named as its new superintendent. of five children and live in Kaysville. Educationally, he obtained his bachelor of science scien-ce degree and master's in elementary education from the University of Utah and masters mas-ters in elementary education and received a doctorate in educational administration from BYU. He has worked in the Davis District since 1952 upon completion com-pletion of his bachelor's degree. de-gree. He served as a fifth-sixth grade teacher at Bountiful Elementary School from 1952-55 1952-55 and as a sixth grade teacher at Layton Elementary School following that for one year. HE WAS named Crestview Elementary School principal in 1956 and served at the Layton school until the summer sum-mer of 1958 when he worked as a University of Utah research assistant while completing his master's work. He resumed his principalship until the spring of 1966 when receiving the assistant-deputy superintendent superin-tendent post. He had acted as acting superintendent su-perintendent since Jan. I. DR. WELLING is active in religious and civic affairs, having hav-ing served as a member of the Kaysville City Council and that city's planning commission. commis-sion.
