Show Clearfield Ready For Hoi" Weber Club By DAVE WIGHAM CLEARFIELD Following Follow-ing the games last week in which the teams all played two leaguer encounters the standings stand-ings at the top of the region are somewhat crowded. CLEARFIELD, Layton and Weber all find themselves on top of the heap with 4-2 records. re-cords. The Falcons can do a lot to ease that situation this Friday Fri-day when they travel up to battle bat-tle the Weber club on the Warrior War-rior floor. In the first meeting the Clearfield club pulled away from their opponents and claimed their first league victory. vic-tory. This past week the Falcons Fal-cons knocked off Roy on their home floor but then on Friday they were beaten by a strong Bonneville club thus putting them into the three-way tie for first. WEBER WAS putting on a great show of their own last week w hen they traveled up to Cache Valley and handed a good Sky View club a 94-73 setback to claim a piece of the top spot. Winning in Cache Valley is tough enough but the Warriors did it convincingly and they have sounded their horn that they are going to make a run at the team title. With their point total last week the Warriors rank second in the league in points per outing but the Falcons w ho seem to love to play defense more than any other club around, rank first in defense. That pits an offensive show against one that can play good solid defense. Clearfield can put points up also while the Warriors have shown they are willing to let their opponents score but w ill simply put more points up. EACH TEAM got good scoring scor-ing from three of their players in last week's action. The Falcons Fal-cons got points in the double digit area from Danny Perkins. Brook Hicks and Troy Nye. These three combined for 39 points in the loss to the Lakers. Jeff Gorringe played a little but is still nursing a bad ankle. Meanwhile three Warrior players were scoring at will as they hit for 78 points between them. Forward Kelly Johnson, a junior, hit for 29 points, guard Ralph Andersen hit for 26 and then Van Fuller added 23. Van Fuller is their outside shooter, his points came from the long range bombs plus he put on a clinic from the foul line hitting on 1 1 out of 12 attempts. WEBER LIKES to play the rough physical style of ball while the Falcons, who won't back away, like to show poise and patience and work for good shots. Weber will shoot from anywhere and have the type of shooters that if they get hot they'll blow people away as they did a week ago. The Falcons like it on top and will be tough to beat out of the championship. Playing on their home floor the Warriors have been strong. It features a couple of good high school clubs, one w ho likes to run and gun and the other playing the patient game. Whoever controls con-trols the tempo of the game will win. |
