Show FASTER RESPONSE TO EMERGENCIES If you needed help, how fast would you want it to come? A new emergency telephone tele-phone recently introduced by the Bell System-E911-is going to help get assistance assis-tance faster than ever before to people who need it. In typical 911 service, all calls are directed to one central dispatcher, who may not be physically located in a caller's municipality. In that case, the dispatcher - must manually transfer the - call for help to a caller's own municipality in order to notify the appropriate emergency agencies. With E911, calls are automatically au-tomatically and immediately immediate-ly routed to a municipality's local emergency services dispatcher. This selective routing is done by computer controlled switching equipment equip-ment which instantly recognizes recog-nizes where the call is coming from and which municipality should provide the emergency service. In addition to this kind New telephone technology will enhance public safety. of call routing, the new E911 service can display a caller's phone number and street address on a TV-like screen positioned in front of the dispatcher, thus allowing allow-ing the dispatcher to assist in emergencies even if the caller hangs up or is unable to talk. E911 was developed at Bell Telephone Laboratories in conjunction with Western Electric Company, the Bell System manufacturing and supply unit. The service eventually will be offered nationwide by the Bell System and Independent Telephone Companies. ' |
