Show CLEANEST CITY OF EUROPE opinion of those familiar with conditions regarding dresden germany A common error among those who do not personally know the city Js la that dresden Is an interesting but medieval town rich in artistic attractions but bereft of those advantages and comforts which the modern tourist demands nothing could be more misleading and on this point there la Is corroboration from one of the keenest of all municipal students dr henry S lunn who some come time ago conducted a party of municipal experts on a tour through germany ills his party he afterward said was prepared to be delighted with the architectural attractions of dresden and with the wonderful art collections which draw vist ors front from all parts of the civilized world to them as aa to most people dres drea den was waa known chiefly as the home of he most beautiful picture in the world the sistine I 1 madonna they had however to recognize that the city not with artistic renown was waa developing ve to a great extent on oh the utilitarian side and la is now a manufacturing center of considerable importance these new enterprises however have not been suffered to spoil the beauty of dresden which has acquired none of the dirt and squalor with which the foreign visitor la Is often too painful painfully I 1 ay familiar in his own large Indu industrial centers in extent dresden la is a little smaller than boston mass the population being nearly the same there are two municipal governing bodies the rat or council and tho the municipal deputies the council consists of 16 paid and 22 unpaid members all the paid members among whom are the master being expected to devote their whole time to the service of the city the schools are splendidly equipped and the cost of maintaining them amounts to upward of per annum A technical art ait school Is provided by the state and there are so called cratta crafts schools for almost every trade there are classes tor for cooking and domestic training for girls in sev several eral ot of the primary schools it la Is to the energy and enterprise of their municipal fathers that Dreaden erB and the few burgomasters burg owe most of the n number un improvements effected in the city and suburbs it Is rather a paradox to find the most artistic city in europe also alao the cleanest city in europe but neither distinction can be denied to dresden indeed the cleanliness of the streets strikes the stranger instantly after having seen berlin and other large german deman de man centers centera at the present moment too the gigantic sewerage system conceived and prosecuted at a cost of many million dollars Is ap pro ching ng completion and dresden then will bo be a model of public sanitation these are admirable virtues tor for a aa city and it Is as well that they should be circulated abroad so as to refute the many misconceptions which exist in regard to the lovely capital of sax uny I 1 |
