Derbyshire received a Job Training Partnership Act Presidential Award in the outstanding private sector volunteer category. Derbyshire received honorable mention in this category of six recipients. reci-pients. Secretary of Labor Lynn Martin presented the award. "Les" Derbyshire, chair of the Davis County Private Industry Council for the past seven years and president of Derbyshire Noid and Company of Bountiful, has been credited with the development of coordinated activities and service with other agencies. The award was given in recognition recogni-tion of his dedication to serving his community. Under Derbyshire's leadership, JTPA and other programs pro-grams have successfully helped those most in need. Derbyshire directed a literacy program that combined the local JTPA program, the state-funded education ed-ucation programs and the Job Corps Center in working together to attack the literacy problems among low income youth. In addition, Derbyshire spearheaded the development of a store front youth center as a dropout recovery system. Funding for the single parent economic independence in-dependence demonstration program and the development of an internship-based job development strategy for women receiving assistance were established through the efforts of Derbyshire. Derbyshire has also gained recognition rec-ognition for his commitment to JTPA programs through his speaking speak-ing engagements to local businesses, busi-nesses, state legislative committees, congressional leaders and governors gover-nors concerning issues of importance impor-tance to the Private Industry Council Coun-cil and the community. Derbyshire was honored for his volunteerism efforts in the private sector. The local businessman received honorable mention out of six recipients in this category. This is the fourth year the JPTA Presidential Awards have been awarded to volunteers and programs that have contributed to strengthening the skills of the nation's workforce through quality training programs. |
