Show i Census I way off ithe mark SALT LAKE CITY An ad-! ad-! justment of the 1990 census could ; bring Utah as much as $9.7 million more in federal funds, according to state officials. A preliminary report ! released by the Census Bureau sug-; sug-; gests the 1990 census may be 6 million people too low. Utah's ' count could also be too low says '. Jim Robson, an analyst for the Utah Office of Planning and Budget. The census counted 1,722,850 people in Utah, a figure Robson said could be low by as many as 60,150 people. The census bureau asked 165,000 residences throughout the country if they had participated in the count. The number who said they had not were used to form high and low estimates of how far off the population popula-tion count for each state was. The survey found that the low estimate for Utah was set at 1,736,000 and the high estimate was l,783,000a2.1 percent difference differ-ence from the number accounted for in the census. Any increase in federal fed-eral appropriations will depend on whether the Department of Commerce Com-merce uses the survey findings to make any adjustments. |
