Show Jones leads Vikes to 8th region soccer win Bountiful, Woods Cross cancel Friday matchups, lead Region 6 standings KAYSVILLE The unbeaten Viewmont Viking soccer machine rolled to its eighth Region 1 victory this season by punishing Davis 7-1 in front of the Darts' home crowd Friday afternoon. The Vikes are now 8-0-1 in region play and 11-0-1 overall. Viewmont's powerful offensive attack was spearheaded by senior Aaron Jones, who logged an unbelievable four, first-half goals to give the Vikings a 5-1 lead at the half. Eight minutes into the contest, Viewmont halfback Jason Pitt drew first blood. Less than five minutes later, Jones would make his first of four trips to the net giving the Vikes a quick 2-0 lead. Davis senior forward Todd Heath retaliated, striking one of the few goals allowed by the stingy Viking defense, Davis only goal on the afternoon. The rest of the half, however, became an Aaron Jones' shooting clinic as Jones proceeded to hit three consecutive shots before the halftime whistle. Senior forward Nick Berry picked pick-ed up second half scoring duties where Jones left off, scoring midway mid-way through the half. Finally, Josh Carmack sealed the Viewmont win, nailing the final goal for the Vikings. "I was expecting a lot closer game, but then our boys came prepared to play hard," Viewmont coach Will Veal explained. Davis slipped to 1-3-4 in region play and 3-4-4 overall with Friday afternoon's defeat. Dart coach Alan Porter said, "We're not a bad team, but I knew we were in trouble part way into the game. ' "They're just a tough team. " In other Region 1 action Friday afternoon, Layton logged a 3-2 win over Bonneville, while Weber and Clearfield battled to a 0-0 double overtime deadlock. The tie was Clearfield's fourth of the season; the Falcons are the only Region 1 team Viewmont has not defeatedthe two region rivals tied 0-0 and will meet again Tuesday May 7. Woods Cross and Bountiful soccer teams cancelled their Friday games due to weather. BOUNTIFUL 6, MURRAY 1 Earlier in the week, the Braves punished a physical Murray Spartan squad 6-1 with an unstoppable show of offensive prowess. Five different Braves were responsible for Bountiful s 6 goals. Offensive marksman Sean Col-ton Col-ton logged two, while Jason Haslam, Jeff Jeppson, Mark Jolley and Brandon Stock each scored a goal apiece. "We played well against Murray," Bountiful coach Dave Wigham said. The Braves will play three games this week, rescheduling last Friday's away game with Granite for Thursday at 4 p.m. Bountiful is scheduled to play West and Judge Tuesday and Friday. Fri-day. Both games are at home. Wigham admitted that playing three games this week will be tough. "It will be good preparation for the state tournament, however," Wigham added-a tournament that may feature Woods Cross and Bountiful in the finals. "The only team in our region that has a chance of beating Woods Cross is us," Wigham said. "But I expect well end up taking second in the region because we lost to Jordan and they beat them. "That will work out well for us because we'll be in separate brackets and maybe meet in the finals. "I told my kids I expect we'll play Woods Cross three times this year. It's the third match that I'm concerned with." In their first meeting this season, the Braves and 'Cats tied 0-0. They will meet again next week. |
