Show Safety near large vehicles urged CENTERVILLE Garbage trucks, buses and other large vehicles hold a fascination for young children, but if the Centerville City Youth Council gets its way, that fascination won't turn into tragedy. The group is serious about safety and has undertaken the task of educating Centerville children about the dangers involved when large vehicles are in their neighborhoods. Youth mayor Laurie Linge and her council members, Allison Cutler, Tana Talbot, Brendan Green, Allison Hancey, Trudy Perkins, Sydney Monson and Blake Beccher, distributed 2,000 fliers on Friday to four Centerville elementary schools. The brightly colored fliers outlined safety precautions the children should observe when garbage trucks are in their neighborhood Children were advised to review the recommendations with their parents. Suggestions include: 1. Do not chase behind or run alongside the truck. 2. Do not go near the truck when garbage is being collected and the can is being dumped. 3. Do not try to retrieve your garbage can until the truck has driven away from your home. 4. Do not try to throw items into the garbage truck. "They wanted to do this as a service to the city and the children," said youth council advisor, Centerville City treasurer Judy Hoven-camp. Hoven-camp. "They learned that a Salt Lake child was killed recently in an accident involving a garbage truck, and they wanted to be sure that didn't happen in Centerville," she said. With summer just ahead, many more children will be outdoors as the garbage trucks and other large vehicles pass through their neighborhoods. Parents are being encouraged to help their children follow the guidelines suggested by the youth council. |
