Show Cutbacks ax forest tours KANAB Kaibab Forest Products Co. has suspended it public tour programs on the Dixie and Kaibab national forests for the upcoming up-coming tourist season because of decreases in its operations. Suspension of the tours was necessary in light of recent layoffs at the company's Fredonia, Ariz., sawmill, said Jim Matson, vice president presi-dent for the forest products company. Seventy-three employees were laid off recently when the mill was forced to cut back to a one-shift operation as a result of substantial timber shortages caused by appeals and lawsuits, Matson said "We been hard hit by the significant decreases in our timber supply supp-ly from the Dixie and Kaibab forests and feel we cannot support the tours this season, Matson said last week. Twelve people are normally involved in conducting the tours from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Matson said the company won't man the Visitors' Center at Jacob Lake this season either. |
