Show Rain doesn't change rationing By JUDY JENSEN Asst. Managing Editor BOUNTIFUL The late spring rain and snowstorms have not changed the specter of water rationing, but mixed messages from cities and water suppliers have Davis County water users confused as to when they can and cannot water. At a recent city council meeting in Bountiful, City Administrator Tom Hardy told residents that anyone who has a new lawn may water at will for 30 days. 'That is simply not true," Merrill Mer-rill Tuttle, manager of the Bountiful Water Subconservancy District, said Monday. "People must follow the two-day watering schedule we announced." Hardy explained the special arrangements ar-rangements he announced Wednesday Wednes-day for those planting new lawns are allowed for Bountiful residents who use culinary water for irrigation. irriga-tion. "The problem is that some of our customers do have irrigation water and others don't," Hardy said. Mayor Jake Simmons said the city has not yet decided whether to impose watering restrictions. "As far as we are concerned, there are no restrictions for people using North Nor-th Salt Lake water at this time' he said. But not all North Salt Lake residents use North Salt Lake water. Some use South Davis Water Conservancy Con-servancy District water for both irrigation ir-rigation and culinary. Those customers must follow the conservancy conser-vancy district guidelines, which differ from customers using North Salt Lake water. "We are not governed by what the cities say said Lynn Thompson Thomp-son at South Davis Water Improvement Im-provement District. She explained the water districts are independent entities. Residents must follow the watering water-ing guidelines imposed by the entity which bills them. (See related chart.) "If everyone will look at their water bill and then follow that entity's en-tity's suggested guidelines, they will be doing the right thing,' said South Davis Water Conservancy District manager Linford Beckstrand. He explained the guidelines his district has adopted are similar, but not identical to restrictions re-strictions imposed by other water districts. Every water district in the city has been swamped by calls from frustrated customers wondering about the restrictions. "I wish everyone would just relax and give it a chance," said Beckstrand. "We can change it overnight if we have to. People are just too upset," he said. |
