Show Local lackers gain honors Five local athletes have earned a unique and distinct honor. The four have been invited to join the 15-member 15-member Utah Select soccer team that will travel to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs this weekend for regional U.S. National Soccer Team competition. com-petition. THE FIVE athletes arc Bountiful High sophomore Keith Bye the youngest player ever to make the Utah Select Team, and his junior teammate for the Braves, Kim Messenger. Also named to the team were former Viewmont all-stater all-stater Alan Ence , and former Davis High standout Chris Johnson, who recently returned from an LDS mission. Captain of the Utah team and a member of it for three years, is another former Viewmont soccer star, Ken Rozema. The coach is Kevin Howard. BOUNTIFUL assistant soccer coach Dave Wigham says being named to the team is an honor for several reasons. "From this competition, com-petition, which runs two days in which all teams play five games, the U.S. Men's Soccer team will be chosen, the one that will likely compete in the 1988 Olympics." He adds that England's soccer team is now in Colorado Springs training for World Cup competition later this summer, and members of the Utah team will undoubtedly have the opportunity of watching them train and compete. |
