Show I Tentative school calendar criticized FARMINGTON - Davis School District is expected to adopt r 1 a school calendar for the 1986-87 school year at its regular Board ? of Education meeting next Tuesday. The district's tentative budget calls for the new school year to begin Aug. 25 and end May 28, 1987, a total of 180 days as required by state law. However, there is some controversy over which holidays will be observed by the district and how many days will be set aside j for Christmas break. ' i The controversy arose when a Utah NAACP representative i challenged the district for using the Martin Luther King Holiday as a teachers' career-ladder day instead of a regular holiday for both students and teachers. The district's tentative calendar schedules Jan. 19 as a career-1 career-1 ladder day for teachers, one of seven career-ladder days allo- ! cated throughout the year. Marvin Davis, a Salt Lake resident, said he was appalled that the Davis School District was proposing Martin Luther King j Day as a career-ladder day for teachers instead of a holiday for ' both students and teachers. "I think children should know what ! this Martin Luther King Day is all about," he told the board. I |
