Show Officers elected to association I NORTHERN DAVIS COUNTY students elected to state positions with the Utah Association of Student Councils include Kim Nalder, Layton High, vice president; and Cory Schaffer, Layton High, northern region representative. By DONETA GATHERUM LAYTON - The annual state convention of the Utah Association Associa-tion of Student Councils was held May 1 and 2 at Layton High School. All high schools in the state of Utah were invited to participate parti-cipate in this state convention that was designed to promote and train student council leadership, to exchange ex-change ideas and to elect state and regional officers. TWENTY-FIVE high schoolers were represented at the convention. conven-tion. Over 350 student leaders and their advisors attended the workshop work-shop sessions and general sessions of the two day convention. Layton families hosted visiting students from as far away as Whitehorse in the Four-Corners area. Out of town students started arriving at 5 p.m. and continued to come until after 8 p.m. They were taken to Layton homes and treated to dinner. A Get Acquainted Stomp featuring music by Sonic Illusion was held Thursday evening even-ing in the Layton High School cafeteria. STUDENTS visiting Layton spent the night with host families and returned to the high school Friday Fri-day morning for the 8:30 a.m. first general session. The convention was opened by Rudy Dautel, UASC president. Layton High School Principal, Paul Smith welcomed wel-comed the convention members to Layton High and talked about the importance of student government in the operation of a successful high school. After viewing a motivational film entitled, "Stepping Forward," the students listened to the keynote address delivered by Dan Clark of Dan Clark Associates, a Salt Lake City based public relations and motivational learning firm. His remarks re-marks centered around the convention con-vention theme, "Let's Go All the Way." STUDENTS then attended the six workshops offered. State officers picked Continued from front page these smaller discussion groups were "Bridging the Cultural Gaps" presented by Whitehorse High School; "Involving Incoming Freshmen and Sophomores" presented pre-sented by Bear River Middle School; "Making Your Student-body Student-body the Number-One Priority" presented by Roy High School; "What is Leadership?" presented by Provo High School; "Promoting "Promot-ing School Spirit" presented by Morgan High School. Separate workshops were held for student-body student-body advisors. In the afternoon, announcement of officers for the 1986-87 school year was made. Three Davis County Coun-ty students were elected to state UASC positions. They were Aaron Rose, Bountiful High School, UASC president; Kim Nalder, Layton High School, UASC secretary sec-retary and Cory Shaffer, Layton High School, Northern Regional Representative. OTHER state UASC officers include in-clude Tommy Lin, vice president and Wendy Newton, public relations. rela-tions. Rulon Homer of Bountiful High School was appointed executive director of Student Councils. THIS IS the fourth year the Utah Association of Student Councils has been functioning. The group meets two times a year and provides pro-vides many helpful suggestions to school student government organizations. |
