Show Artist in Residence program at Monte Vista Very Special Arts Utah and Davis School District have set plans for an "artist in residence" on Jan. 4-15. A major purpose of the Very Special Arts is to heighten community awareness about the value of arts programming for disabled dis-abled children and adults. The "artist in residence" portion por-tion of the program provides an opportunity for handicapped students, stu-dents, paired with their normal peers, to work directly with skilled artists from the community. The events planned for the two weeks of January will have Lynn Topovski, a renowned dancer with the Ririe Woodbury Dance Company, Com-pany, working with students in eight different schools. Mr. Topovski will engage the students in a variety of dance activities. These residency sessions encourage encour-age student participation by minimizing mini-mizing failure. This process expands ex-pands the students' self-esteem while improving their communication, communica-tion, socialization, and gross motor skills. The theme "Together" was selected for this year's activities, to highlight the importance of the integration of handicapped students stu-dents in the community. The involvement in-volvement of normal peers in all of the planned activities should enhance en-hance their relationships with the disabled. An important component of the residency will be a parent workshop, work-shop, to be held at Whitesides Elementary in Layton. Families of all students participating in the residency re-sidency are invited to attend on Jan. 12, from 7-8 p.m., in the Whitesides multi-purpose room. Those attending can plan on working work-ing with Lynn Topovski in a very active, informative program. |
