Show Generosity of residents paying big dividends for county United Way drive By TOM BUSSELBERG BOUNTIFUL Davis County residents are in a giving mood this season it appears. The helping hand hasn't been confined to Christmas, either, says Larry Burdett, Davis County United Un-ited Way executive director. Although the 1987 campaign is hardly over, he notes a generosity that has far exceeded last year in both speed of receiving pledges and overall amount. By Jan. 3 more than four-fifths of the $540,000 goal had been achieved. That means $439, 1 10 has been collected. "We're ahead of last year and will still be running some additional company campaigns in January," Mr. Burdett said. "We're lowering the boom on $500,000," he added. "We've had excellent support from most of our major contributors," contribu-tors," he continued, "with a lot pledging increases over the 1986 campaign. It's still too early to tell as far as specific increases," he added. The campaign will "probably go into February," he added. Thousands of residents are served through various agencies receiving funding support from Davis County United Way. Agencies within Davis County receiving United Way support include: in-clude: Davis County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services; Association for Retarded Citizens; County Dental De-ntal Health Program; County Family Support Center; Human Services; County Information and Referral Service; Pioneer Adult Rehabilitation Center and Elaine Moon Center Project Turn. Several dozen other agencies provide service to the county, such as the Hill Air Force Base Youth Group, Hospice of Northern Utah and Children's Aid Society. "All allocations to agencies are made by volunteers who serve without pay," Mr. Burdett noted. "They make the basic decisions concerning how much money is allocated to each agency based upon the service it is rendering and community needs." . Volunteers also serve as a board of directors and handle most phases of the operation. A two person per-son full-time staff works under the direction of those volunteers. Overhead averages about 10-12 percent of total funds raised. Further information is available by calling 295-6677. |
