Show Walking Smart Club offers exercise for better condition LAYTON The "Walking Smart Club," an exercise program for those persons wishing to walk their way to better health, will be introduced Tuesday, Jan. 12 with the public invited to a free Continental Con-tinental Breakfast at 8:30 a.m. in the center court area of the Lay ton Hills Mall. Jim Anderson, the newly-appointed newly-appointed director of cardiac rehabilitation re-habilitation and the fitness center at Humana Hospital Davis North, will deliver a short address concerning con-cerning the benefits of walking and exercise. Anderson, a successful former athlete and graduate of Layton High School, earned a B.S. degree in physical therapy from the University of Utah and an M.S. degree in fitness and health promotion promo-tion with an emphasis in exercise physiology from Brigham Young University. The Continental Breakfast seminars semi-nars will be held quarterly for participants parti-cipants in the Walking Smart Club, a program co-sponsored by Humana Huma-na Hospital Davis North, Layton Hills Mall and KDYL Radio. In addition to other support, the Bank of Utah's "55 Plus" Club is providing provid-ing some funding for the first of the quarterly sessions. "Walking in the mall, especially Q cld weather states, has become Tncreasingly popular," says Anderson, "and is a convenient and safe area for such exercise. "Walking benefits the lungs, the head, the heart, the back, the legs, the bone and stomach. In fact, re- search shows that a regular walk-F walk-F ing program at least 30 minutes each day, five days each week can benefit the body in many im-I im-I portant ways. Walking has become t the favorite sport in America." J Walking Smart Club members : will be offered free blood pressure ji'exams each Friday from 8:30-9:30 t a.m. courtesy of the hospital. In S addition, the mall provides similar j exams from 9-10 a.m. on the first Monday of each month. Plans are also being finalized for Walking Smart Club members to receive an exercise and health-related health-related newsletter produced by the hospital and the 55-Plus Club. Membership in the Walking Smart Club is free with applications applica-tions available at the Jan. 12 breakfast break-fast session or during daytime hours at the mall office. |
