Baby, girls help usher in new year in Davis County By TOM HARALDSEN CENTERVILLE When Lyn Bessey of Centerville discovered the due date for her sixth child was Dec. 29, her husband Rick began teasing her about the possibility of having a New Year's baby. Guess what happened? Lyn gave birth to little Chelsi Bessey at 9:15 a.m. Friday the first baby born this new year at Bountiful's Lakeview Hospital. Little may not be the best word to describe Chelsi, however. She weighed in at nine pounds, eight ounces, and measured 23 inches long. "She's by far the biggest baby we've had," her proud mother stated Saturday, when the new arrival was greeted at home by her five older brothers and sisters. Lyn and Chelsi were welcomed home by posters made by the Bes-seys' Bes-seys' children, who include Heather, Heath-er, 11, Cami, 10, Ryan, 7, Jessica, 5, and Jacob, 2. Father Rick was also doing all he could to help with the new arrival. Though the Besseys hadn't given much thought to having the first baby of the year, they were certainly aware of the possibility. "It was remarkably quiet at the hospital this time," remarked Rick, who has taken his wife to Lakeview for the birth of each of their six children. "I don't think we had much competition for the first baby of the year." Rick, self-employed in construe- tion, figures Lyn will have plenty of help with Chelsi from each of their children, even from Jacob, who was still grinning from ear to ear Saturday at the prospects of a new baby sister. LAYTON The first baby born at Humana North Hospital in 1988 barely made it on the first day of the year. Penny Hammon, the 7 pound 5 ounce daughter of Steve and Kaleen Hammon of Syracuse, did not make her appearance until 10:21 p.m., January 1. "She was actually one week early ear-ly and we had no idea she would be the first baby," laughed Kaleen. She explained she had some "strange pains on Thursday and Steve went over to his mom's house and got a book about child birth." As Kaleen described what was happening, Steve would scan the pages of "The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth", to "find out what was going on." Ka- leen explained that when Steve got to the chapter entitled, "When to Go to the Hospital," he convinced her it was the thing to do. Their tiny new daughter has a head full of copper-colored hair. "Ever since I was little, I've wanted a baby girl with red hair I could name Penny and now my wish came true," said Kaleen as she cradled Penny in her arms. Jacob is Penny's two and one-half one-half year old brother and he is very excited about the baby. He tries to be very helpful with "holding" the baby joked Kaleen. "Penny just rounds out our family," said Kaleen. Ka-leen. The Hammons are delighted with their New Year's baby. "Now we can celebrate New Year's Hve and just keep celebrating all day New Year's too!" laughed Kaleen. ,.,.111.1.1.1... Kill. |
