Show Uintah Takes Over Lead With 53-38 Victory Over Altamont Longhorns; Union Looked Like Champs In DIIS Win UINTAH DIVISION Standing of Teams Uintah 3 0 1.000 Altamont 2 1 .667 Union 2 1 .667 Tabiona 1 2 .333 Duchesne 0 4 .000 Last Week's Results Union 59 - Duchesne 22 (A Team) Union 62 - Duchesne 32 ("B" Teams) Uintah 53 - Altamont 38 February 5th Schedule Uintah at Tabiona Union at Altamont By scoring a decisive 53-38 victory over Altamont last Friday Fri-day night at Vernal, the Utes from Uintah High School become be-come the team to beat for the Uintah Basin title in '54. Veloy Eaton, 6-ft. sophomore center for the Utes came through with 17 points to lead the offensive drive of his team, and spindly Norm Merrill collected 11 for second honors. Gary Jessen, the lad who scored 29 points in the opening game with Tabiona, led the Longhorns with 12. While the Utes were handing the Longhorns their first league loss, Coach Glen Allred's Cougars Cou-gars from Union disposed of the Eagles from Duchesne, 59-22, in a contest that saw the Utah Class "B" champions looking like the team that won the honors hon-ors last year. There can be little doubt in the minds of any and every fan who saw the Cougar-Eagle game at Union last Friday, that if the Cougars continue to play the type of basketball, both offensively of-fensively and defensively, they played against the Eagles, they will be back at the "Y" field-house field-house come next March, defending defend-ing the title they won in '53. Playing- without their scoring ace, Packy Fenn, who along with Dale Womac, sat that one out for reasons best known by their coach, the Cougars presented pre-sented a defense that simply couldn't be penetrated. They rushed the clever Eagles on their outside shooting, and made it virtually impossible for them to work the ball in for close-range shots. They cleared the boards like champions, and the entire team's shooting was beautiful. Scoring was divided about as evenly as it could have been, with high scorer, Gib Harris, collecting 9 points. The presence of Gordon El-dredge El-dredge made a great difference to the Cougars as he took over the post spot, and used his height to a great advantage on rebounds. Another youngster who turned in a whale of a defensive game was Reuben Broderick. He worked beautifully beauti-fully on the boards and his out side set shots gives Coach All-red All-red strength where it is needed. The entire team worked very effectively togther. Followers of the Eagles need not offer any apologies foT their team. They are a smooth organization, organ-ization, with Leon Sprouse and Jerry Burdick being among the top performers in the league. Sprouse led the Eagles in scoring scor-ing with 7. Union's 'B" team came through with a decisive victory over the little Eagles. Robert Jensen led the baby Cougars with 17 points for high honors for the night. The final score was 62-32. This week finds Uintah making mak-ing the long trip to the western end of the Basin to meet dangerous dan-gerous little Tabiona, who are capable of making things rough for opponents on their own flobr. They could pull an upset. Union also draws a toughie, as they meet the Longhorns on the Altamont floor. Duchesne draws a bye. This series will end the first round of play for all teams. The following week, four teams will play a Wednesday schedule on Feb. 10, when Duchesne Du-chesne goes to Uintah and Altamont Al-tamont moves to Tabiona. The Cougars draw a bye to await the big game of the year with Uintah on Feb. 12th at Union.
