Show ASKS CHAMBER SUPPORT Duchesne Group Makes Plea To Support Indian Canyon Mayor Otto E. Johnsen and-Chester and-Chester Lyman, of Duchesne, met Tuesday with the directors of the Roosevelt Chamber of Commerce at their regular directors' di-rectors' meeting, to present facts, figures and maps of the two controversial roads between the Basin and Carbon County Recently the City of Duchesn? met with the county commis-'sioners commis-'sioners and asked for a resolution resolu-tion opposing the building of the proposed Nine Mile road at the exclusion of Indian Canyon. Such a resolution was approved by the commission. The Duchesne leaders had maps which showed the two routes, and other data to sub- stantiate their protests on the' Nine Mile route, which is being pushed so strongly by the Price Chamber of Commerce. They I : pointed out that during the past five years, 1949 to and including includ-ing 1953, keeping the Indian Canyon highway open to traffic during the snow season required a minimum of effort and man hours. They urged the Chamber of Commerce to consider all the facts before making any kind of a decision either for or against either proposal. 1 Dri Paul Stringham, president of the Chamber, read a letter from Mayor Steve J. Diamanti, of Helper, in which he emphasized empha-sized that Helper definitely was opposed to the Nine Mile road, giving as reasons that the road would cut the north end of Carbon Car-bon County off the highway entirely. en-tirely. Stringham a committee on roads and highways high-ways was appointed with Merlin Mer-lin Sullivan as chairman and Howard Harrison as co-chairman. Another problem prob-lem given the new committee was to push the reconditioning of Roosevelt Main Street during dur-ing the coming summer. Bennie Schmiett, chairman of the Upper Colorado River project pro-ject committee, reported on the Washington hearing, which was attended by ten from Duchesne and 17 from Uintah counties. He reported that through the efforts of the Chamber of Commerce Com-merce $1599.50 was raised to finance the trip to Washington of the local delegates. In addition addi-tion to the local delegates he stated that the Uintah Freight Lines sent three from their own organization to the hearing. |
