To answer these questions we must go back into history a wee bit. In fact, to 1862, when the Agricultural Extension Act was first passed; which, in part reads: "To aid in diffusing among the people of the United States useful use-ful and practical information on subjects relating to agriculture and home economics and to encourage en-courage the application of the same." So, you can see we were set up as an educational agency and have functioned as such since the beginning bringing to you through meetings, farm and home visits, radio, and newspaper the latest in developments and findings find-ings of our experimental stations and research department of our state and federal governments We point with pride to the achievements of the Extension Service within the Uintah Basin. We believe we are safe in saying that 90 of the improvements ot our modern day farming has come about either directly or indirectly through information and demonstrations demon-strations brought to you from the home or county agent. To mention a few: Grade A milk production (expanding of Hi-Land Hi-Land Dairy to the County), The bull grading work which has im- (Continued on Back Page) County Agents . . . (Continued from Page 1) proved the beef cattle from an I inferior mixed animal to a very high quality beef animal; Introduction Intro-duction of new improved grains and alfalfa; soil testing and rates of fertilization; drainage and crop rotation; planting of corn for silage; sil-age; weed control; insect eradication eradica-tion program; water conservation and wind breaks. These are just a partial list that could be named. On the Homemaking side of the picture, aids in homemaking; cooking; cook-ing; sewing; and planning of a well balanced meal; teaching the value of canning; freezing; and new and better methods of home decoration. We have not mentioned your children, of which 399 were members mem-bers of a 4-H Club within the County receiving help, and instruction instruc-tion in every type of project they showed interest in. During the past year your agents ag-ents visited 1681 farms and homes and answered the elephone or called 2616 times; held 374 meetings, meet-ings, with 8832 persons in attendance. atten-dance. They published 253 newspaper news-paper information articles and talked to you 74 times through weekly radio broadcasts. Leaders trained through the Extension Service held 649 meetings with 4391 in attendance. To accomplish the above program pro-gram we spent $338.38 on office supplies, ' stamps, etc. Paid our j stenographer $1491.83, and used $141.00 on demonstration materials mater-ials and experiments. The telephone tele-phone bill amounted to $228.00, while $1541.00 was used as travel and miscellaneous. Housing cost us $540.00 with a total of $4300.21 being expended during the year. Our finances come from three sources: Federal government, state and county. So, our responsibility lies with such. We are in the county as "off the campus" teachers to aid you, Mr. Farmer and Mrs. Homemaker so that through education and research you can put your farm on a paying proposition and make your farm house a home, and an improved standard of living for all.
