Show Viking Year Hangs In Balance By DAVE WIGHAM Clipper Sports VIEWMONT Not long ago when region basketball warfare opened up Viewmont coach Ron Johansen indicated that their first two games of the season, against Davis and then East, were the two biggest games of the year. WELL THE VIKINGS have gone through everyone in Region Four once and now they are back where they started. This Tuesday they take on Davis in Kaysville and then Friday Fri-day they host the unpredictable Leopards from East. Several weeks ago the Vikes were 0-0 in region and now they stand 1-4 and still face the two most important games of their season. See everyone in Region Four is searching for one of the top four places and an invitation to the state tournament. Woods Cross and Bountiful seem to have a lock on two of those spots but the other two and a fight between the other four clubs in the league. VIEWMONT AND Davis are at 1-4 while East and Highland are at 2-3 records. Now are you getting the picture as to just how important these next two outings are for the Vikes.. LN THEIR LOSS to Highland last week the Vikings used everyone that suited up and just who plays in this East game will probably be determined by the Davis battle on Tuesday. Senior Kevin Smith continues to be the brightest bright-est spot on the Vikes team as he always seems to be able to get his points despite giving away plenty of height in the middle. Currently Kevin is averaging just under 16 points an outing through the first five region games but after him the Vike scoring falls off in a hurry. In their first meeting the East siders pulled away in the final three minutes to win by ten but the battle could have been won by either army. In that meeting Brad Monson of East enjoyed his height advantage to shoot over the smaller Vikes for 29 points. Viewmont could look to their youth by this time with several talented juniors, or even sophomores, ready to get some playing experience. experi-ence. In any event this week is a very big one for the Vikes and their basketball fortunes for the season. |
