Show i : If History Repeats, So Will Top Seeds - By DAVE WIGHAM Clipper Sports KAYSVILLE All the hours of dedication and hard work for the wrestlers in Region Four comes to a head this Thursday when they all conv erge on Davis High for their annual region meet. SIMPLY STATED these wrestlers have to place in the top four at this one meet or their season is over. Only the top four continue on to the state event to be held at Weber Slate College. Col-lege. For the past five weeks the schools in the region have battled each other in dual meet competition with the host Davis side winning all five to claim the title in that area. Bountiful, Yiewmont and Woods Cross were closest to the Darts and all of them suffered two losses. The region meet though is a different experience, experi-ence, both for the individual and the teams, since a team which has five or six good wrestlers wrest-lers could do well in the region meet as a team yet not win that many dual meets. WHILE DAMS is the solid favorite for the team title this w eek most of the coaches point to Yiewmont as their main competition. The Yikes were 3-2 in region dual meets but they have five wrestlers who did not lose in those meets which w il make them tough in the region meet. Bountiful and Woods Cross could also make a solid run at the team title since both of them have some top individual grapplers but the depth of the Davis crew is going to be a tough act to follow. Along with their depth the Darts have some solid favorites to win individual indi-vidual crowns. Last Friday the coaches of the region met in their seeding meeting and picked the top four wrestlers from each weight class and seeded them according to their records against the other wrestlers in their dual meets. Here then is a capsule look at all the weights as determined deter-mined by the coaches. 98 Pounds Charlie Haswood of Woods Cross drew the top seed here with an impressive 5-0 region record. Mike Pugh of Highland went 4-1 on the season to draw the number two seed with Derek De-rek Green of Davis third seed and Paul Rice of Bountiful fourth. HASWOOD IS a solid choice here having beaten Pugh in strong fashion when the two met although Pugh is capable of taking the title. 105 Pounds Shawn Robinson of Davis went 5-0 in region meets to earn the top seed over Razaghi of East who finished at 4-1. Jody Bordrero of Woods Cross is seeded third with Shawn Moore of Viewmont fourth. ROBINSON WON the region title at 98 a year ago and is a strong favorite to claim this one. The fight will come for second place since the other three wrestlers all had extremely close matchs when they faced one another. 112 Pounds Adam Howard of Viewmont was 5-0 in region re-gion meets to claim the top seed but Jeff Olsen of Bountiful is right behind in number two at 4-1 . Steve Fultz of Woods Cross is seeded third with Todd Collins of Davis fourth. THIS ONE should be a classic battle since Howard and Olsen have split in their two meetings meet-ings on the year. Olsen beat Howard at the Layton tournament but then Howard won when the two locked up in region. Don't overlook over-look the other two in th s weight class either, both of them are capable of finishing at the top. 119 Pounds Jeff Sowell of Viewmont closed out region as the top seed with a 5-0 mark with Vaun Hall of Highland as second seed at 3-1-1. Third seed is Mike Gerrard of Davis with Tim Gordon of Woods Cross the fourth seed. THIS COULD be a mystery weight class. Sowell is the solid favorite to claim the crown but then the other three spots are all up for grabs. Unseeded Kent Ortolani of Bountiful is capable of placing in the top four. Basically anyone can claim this title with Sowell given the best shot. 126 Pounds Rodger Reynard of Davis was 4-1 in region duals and thus earned the top spot with Bill Shuldberg of Woods Cross in second at 3-1. Dave Blauer of Viewmont is third seed with a 1-0 region record with sophomore Ron Remigi of Bountiful the fourth seed. FORGET THE seeding here, Dave Blauer of Viewmont is the top man in this weight, he is undefeated in dual meets but at the 132 pound class. Dave is a defending region champion and the solid pick here although Reynard and Shuldberg are very capable of winning as well. 132 Pounds Tracy Kirkham of Woods Cross drew the top seed with a 3-1 record while second seed Chris Cardinet is also at 3-1. Eddie Snow of Bountiful is the number three seed with Brett White of Highland as number four. THIS WEIGHT class will probably be one of the most interesting, competitive anyway, with anyone of the top three seeds given a shot at the title. No matter which wrestler wins the crown there are going to be some top matches in this class all day. Kirkham is a defending region champ and that experience rates him a slight favorite. 138 Pounds Viewmont's Matt McNiel is the top seed here with a 4-0 region mark with Benson Alder of Bountiful second with a 4-1 mark. Barney of Highland is seeded third with Darren Rujuvin of Davis as number four. McNIEL IS a defending region champ and a state runnerup and is solid in this weight. Alder of Bountiful will meet McNiel in the finals which will mark the fourth time these two have met on the year. 145 Pounds John Jones of Davis drew the top seed with a 5-0 record with Shon Wilson of Viewmont second seed with a 3-0 record. Kamerath of East is number three with Kurt Sheppard of Bountiful as number four. IT COULD be an interesting matchup in the finals with Wilson and Jones both undefeated. Wilson missed two meets with an injury but has looked strong since returning. Don't look past the other two seeds either, both could pull off upsets. 155 Pounds Davis appears to have a lock on this title with junior Nate Hinckley and his 5-0 record. Trent Jones of Bountiful is seeded second at 4-1 followed fol-lowed by Glenn Martin of Viewmont and Hanavar of East. HINCKLEY IS a solid pick in this weight, in their dual meet last week he easily defeated the number two seed, but anything can happen in a region tournament. 167 Pounds This could be another great division. Joe Gillespie of Woods Cross is top seed at 4-1 followed by second seed Jeff Hammer of Davis at 3-2. Geurts of East is third seed while sopho-1 more Mark Pozzouli of Viewmont is at four. ONE GUY who'll figure in the outcome of this class is Bountiful's Alan Teeples. Although not seeded you can bet Alan will be in the top four somewhere, he pinned Hammer in their dual meet last week. The main reason L he was not seeded was the lack of dual meets since he took over late in the season. Gillespie was the most consistent during the year and is the favorite. 185 Pounds This will be a great battle between Mike Lee of Bountiful, the top seed at 5-0 and Gregg McNabb of Davis, the second seed at 4-1. Hib-bard Hib-bard of East is third seed with Mark Zesiger of Viewmont the fourth seed. LEE PINNED McNabb last week in their dual meeting but McNabb was ahead on points at the time so many rate this as a tossup. Zesiger Zesi-ger has been nursing a bad ankle all season and its condition will have a bearing on his finish. Then too don't overlook Ben Gillespie of Woods Cross who could very well place in the top four. Unlimited Mike Farr of East is top seed at 5-0 with Dave Smith of Bountiful as the second seed at 2-0. Ken Fincher of Woods Cross is third seed with Rody Meacham of Davis number four. THE SMITH and Farr matchup could be a great one providing they both make it to the finals. Fincher is definitely capable of winning at this weight. As one coach put it anything can happen when those big guys get going on the mats. So there is a quick look at the way the coaches seeded the region and the one thing you can be sure of is that someone not mentioned men-tioned in this story will come through and head to the state meet. AS FOR THIS reporter's choices, well he sees Davis winning the team title with Viewmont View-mont having the most individual champions. |
