Show BJHS Open House Will Honor 2 Who Plan To Retire , i I K ( f j - 1 t . ! r ' . I ' JACK SIMMONDS The public is invited to attend an open house given by the administration and faculty of Bountiful Junior High to honor Coach Jack Simmonds, who is retiring after a 35-year teaching career, and Mrs. Portia Por-tia Stott, who is retiring after a 32-year-career as manager of the cafeteria. THE OPEN house will be held at Bountiful Junior High, 30 West 400 North, on Wednesday, May 18, from 4-6 p.m. Mrs. Stott and her husband, Darrell , are former residents of Fillmore, Utah, where for the first seven years of their marriage, mar-riage, he was a chef in a cafe. From him, Portia gained first hand knowledge pertaining to quantity cooking. This proved valuable pre-training for her future career. MOVING to Bountiful in June of 1951, Portia, who had been trained in accounting and " secretarial work, found, while working at Bountiful Junior ' High's cafeteria, that she much preferred cooking and H f MRS. DARRELL (PORTIA) STOTT food services to keeping books. Thus, began her 32-year 32-year career with the Davis School Food Services Department Depart-ment and Bountiful Junior High. Portia Stott and her husband plan on traveling and pursuing their respective hobbies upon her retirement. Naturally, being the parents of three sons and grandparents of 16, they will have much family enjoyment. enjoy-ment. BOUNTIFUL Junior High athletic teams under the direction direc-tion of Coach Simmonds have participated in baseball, basketball, bas-ketball, football, track and tennis ten-nis tournaments and events for the past 35 years. During that time, Coach Simmonds' teams have brought many ribbons and trophies home to Bountiful Junior High which are proudly displayed throughout the school and which greatly enhance en-hance our "school spirit." AMONG HIS former students stu-dents are present teachers at Bountiful Junior High, Sam Holbrook and Dr. Harvey Price. They can tell many a yam about "school days with coach." In fact, numerous of his present students are grandchildren grand-children of his first students during those early beginning years. On June 21, 1918, Coach Jack Simmonds was born in Tooele, Utah. He grew up there, graduated from Tooele High School and attended Utah State University at Logan. WORLD WAR II broke out and Coach Simmonds, now 20 years old, served for the next 4'2 years in the Army Antiaircraft Anti-aircraft branch. Upon his discharge, dis-charge, he returned to Tooele, but then moved to Bountiful where he married the former Connie Johnson of Yakima, Washington, on March 6, 1945. They had met during the war when Connie was a nurse. Between them, they have had very active service oriented lives. Coach Simmonds Sim-monds in his teaching career and Connie serving as a head nurse on both the surgical and maternity floors at St. Mark's Hospital in Salt Lake City. PARENTS of three grown children, two sons and a daughter, and grandparents of six, they enjoy a happy family life. Between them, Coach and Mrs. Simmonds have a favorite favo-rite shared hobby, breeding and showing dachshunds. They have won numerous ribbons rib-bons and awards at dog shows and anticipate traveling frequently fre-quently to many more dog shows with their dachshunds after Coach Simmond's retirement. retire-ment. AMONG THE scheduled events honoring Coach Jack Simmonds and Mrs. Portia Stott are a studentbody-PTA assembly, the open house on Wednesday, May 18 from 4-6 p.m. at Bountiful Junior High and a faculty dinner Friday, May 27 to be held at the Red Flame in Bountiful. |
