Show STATE SOCCER Vikes Win, Cats Loose By DAVE WIGHAM Clipper Sports SALT LAKE CITY Alan Ence of View-mont View-mont was the smallest player on the field at the time but he quickly became the big man for the Vikes as his made penalty shot gave the View-mont View-mont soccer team a thrilling 4-3 victory over favored Bonneville in the opening round of the state 4-A tournament. THE GAME had to be decided by penalty shots after the two teams were tied 2-2 after regulation and then neither one could score in the sudden death overtime periods. Under the rules each team then selects five players to take penalty shots to determine the winner. Chris Beckman of Viewmont was the first man to take a penalty shot and he drilled it home for a 1-0 edge for the Vikes. Bonneville quickly tied the score though as their first shooter made a goal. But then something funny happened. The next four shooters from each school all missed on their efforts. Bonneville had a golden opportunity to win the match on their fifth attempt but the shot sailed high over the bar. THEN THE rules state that each team takes one shot at a time for sudden death. It was now that Ence cooly and calmly drilled his shot into the upper left hand part of the net. Bonneville missed and the Viking players rushed to Ence -and raised him onto their shoulders. Viewmont appeared to have the game well in hand during regulation play but each time the Lakers came back to get the equalizer. Ver-naun Ver-naun Gines gave the Vikes their first lead in the first half when he gathered in a long pass from a freekick from Lonnie Birkenfeld and drilled a shot into the lower left corner. That lead held up until midway through the second half. BONNEVILLE tied the score when the Vikes had a little let down on defense allowing a Laker halfback to dribble into the penalty area without being picked up and he put the ball into the back of the net. Viewmont then scored their second goal and again Gines had a hand in it. Vernaun hit a shot from his right wing position that the goalie couldn't control, an alert Jeff Pear quickly jumped on the loose ball and kicked it home for the goal. It appeared this goal would hold up for the win but Bonneville scored late in the game to send it into overtime. BOTH TEAMS were content on not letting the other score in the sudden death overtime periods and the penalty shots pursued. i" "--i..w--'-3:w .w. ,s i,' m .0 S-' ':--'"Vfw',".Mti. - ,:."?'; .'- ' Vmv . vs. .'si; 't V l ,"- . v A- rr' i .?. 7 1 ' -"V A , st , vj 'f ; - , ! v ! . , . -. vV"f, ' 1 Alan Ence puts away the winning goal in Viewmont's 4-3 victory over Bonneville in Monday's opening state round. - Wait till next year. It's a big cliche in sports but Brighton has been waiting for a year to get back at Woods Cross and last Monday they got their chance and downed the Cats 6-0 in their opening round state matchup. IT WAS the Cats who downed Brighton twice last year en-route to their state title and the Bengal players all noted they had been waiting a full year for another shot at the Cats. Most of the players off that Woods Cross title team were on the sidelines watching this matchup as the Cats showed their youth and inexperience. All season coach Kevin Rigby has indicated that at times his young club, they start seven sophomores, shows their inexperience. Well on Monday they showed a lot of it. MAYBE IT was nervousness or first game jitters but the Cats defense gave the Bengals their first two goals and from then on the Brighton players were out for blood. As one Wildcat sophomore player put it though, "last year they were young and they took their lumps. We're young and will take our lumps but we'll be back." YEA, WE know. Wait till next year. i. y - p 'i v- t - J M ; ' . J " . . . r M -"1 Mike Chibrias ( 1 5) and Kirk Dythes (3) get help from behind, but that was the only time the Bengals were behind as the won 6-0. |
