Show Chemical Sprays: Use Only With Care I hope everyone will take notice of this warning. If you use chemicals of any kind please, and I repeat, please read the instructions and follow them to the letter, says Melvin S. Burningham, USU Area Horticulturist. FIRST BEFORE using any chemical to kill insects or suppress diseases find out what disease or insect you have then use the proper chemical. Some chemicals are for chewing insects, some are for sucking insects and some chemicals will kill these insects in-sects as they crawl. Then, know what plant the insect is on and whether or not the chemical is approved for that particular pest and plant. FOR INSTANCE, chlordane will not control aphids, and some forms or chlordane will injure some plants. For instance, I know of one person' who sprayed her cherry tree for the black cherry aphid. She got rid of the aphids all right because the spray dried all the leaves and the aphids starved to death. ANOTHER person sprayed her petunias for pests with an oil base chlordane. She had to replant all of her petunias because the ones she sprayed all died. So let me warn you, read the directions on the container and follow instructions carefully, Mr. Burningham concludes. |
