Show By LE ANN ALLEN You have only one body but taking care of it can be more effort than some people are willing to put forth. EXERCISE can be time consuming, boring, inconvenient in-convenient and cause soreness. These are the greatest great-est cause of people not get ting enough exercise, said Ed Anderson to Bountiful Kiwanians. Out of the two million deaths in this country each year, one million are due to cardio-vascular problems, he said. EXERCISE WILL promote longevity and enjoyment of health. Mr. Anderson demonstrated demon-strated that arteries can be open or nearly closed wuh cholesterol or fat products. There are two kinds of people when it comes to exer-cise-those who are "for" and those who are "against." He quoted a Chicago University president as saying that when he feels like exercising, he lays down until the feeling goes away. TO GET the full value from exercise, the heart and lungs must be exercised daily, enough to cause increased pulse and breath rata. "The weekend warrier type does little promote his health," he said. In fact, there are more heart attacks on Mondays and Tuesdays, directly attributed to overly strenuous weekending. BEAUTIFUL muscle tone is not an indication of cardiovascular cardio-vascular strength. A recent "Mr. Universe" applied for a fire department position but after taking an exercise to increase pulse rate, he failed the test. Jogging, bicycling, tennis and handball are all good but the amount must be increased each day to give the needed effect to exercise the heart. "IT IS the last few strokes after you're tired that count toward cardio-vascular exercise," exer-cise," he said. The pulse rate should be doubled at least two and up to 15 to 20 times a day. He introduced an isokinetic exercise. Isotonic, or any exercise with motion has been used for years. Isometric, or pushing against an immovable immova-ble object, has been found to be useful, but isokinetic combines com-bines the two. HE DEMONSTRATED an "accommodating device" that allows every major muscle in the body to be exercised in 22 seconds. It accommodates to meet strength capabilities of every person. The isokinetic exercises were first developed for the astronauts. It now is used by virtually every major sports team in the United States, says Mr. Anderson. |
