Show ( Use Care On The Labor Day Roads : Careful trip planning could make U. S. : $ highways safer over the upcoming Labor :i Day holiday weekend, the Utah Safety : Council advises. jji ACCORDING TO the Council, the last : holiday of the summer season is, for :j $ many motorists, the occasion to pack one :j: i final automobile outing into three days of j:j :; vacation time. This "last chance" men- :: jj: tality, the Council said, may prompt mo- g j torists to try to drive great distances into ii jij; little time. The result, according to the g Council, often is a deadly combination of : j; driver fatigue and excess speed. j: 5 Utah Safety Council President, Linn C. : Baker, encouraged motorists to plan their :;j trips realistically over the holiday, allow- : : ing themselves enough time to get to and :: from their destinations while driving at : posted speed limits. "ITS ALSO a good safety policy to take :: rest break or change drivers every two g hours," Baker said. "Drowsiness can be :: jj: temporarily remedied by coffee or fresh g air," he added, "but drivers should be ;: carefui not to overestimate their JS stamina." :: J According to the council, between 460 :: ! and 560 persons may lose their lives in g :: traffic accidents over the Labor Day g : holiday, beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. g :: 29, and ending at midnight Monday. Sept. :j: g 1. The council also projected that between jS :j: 18,000 and 23,000 persons might suffer : g disabling injuries from motor vehicle ac- g: S cidents over the holiday. By comparison, g: g the council said about 410 fatalities and g; :: 17,000 disabling injuries could be expect- :g g ed over a normal, non-holiday period of g; $ the same length. :g THE COUNCIL also projected that :: about 12.6 billion miles would be driven :g : over the holiday, resulting in a mileage :g $: . death rale of 5.4 fatalities per 100 million :g K vehicle miles traveled. The council said :g that about 11.9 billion miles could be g g: driven over a similar, non-holiday period, g S: producing a mileage death rate of 4.6 fa- g g: talities per 100 million vehicle miles. g $ |
