An-' An-' derson, says she hasn't had to arrest anyone except handle a few drunk drivers and shoplifters. However, she says she will be expected to do everything that a policeman would do. : SHE DOESN'T have a 'devil-may-care" bravery, but a dedication to do her job. : Training and knowing what to , do makes the difference. "Police work and handling :the criminal element doesn't ; frighten me," she said. Before her appointment as a policewoman, she worked : five years for the department. four years as a dispatcher and one year in the Youth Bureau. "I HAVE never been one to dwell on the possibility of danger. Everyone in police work, even in dispatching, knows in the back of their minds that there is danger. They do what they can to protect themselves, but don't think about it." Communication is one of the most important things in police work. It is part of my job to get people and especially youth, to relate their troubles and admit to what they have been accused of, she said. "MANY OF the youth have done something wrong to get help because they are having trouble at home." "Basicly, 1 like people and like to think the best of them. I hope I could talk my way out of touchy situations. I think every officer hopes that he will never have to shoot at someone. "MY MOTHER says I could never shoot at anyone," and her feminine, warm personality per-sonality seems to bear this idea. But she is realistic and knows that defense of herself or someone else may require her to do so. Bountiful Police Chief Dean 0. Anderson (no relation) says there are situations that can be handled much better by a woman, especially cases involving women and juveniles. MRS. ANDERSON will be taking an eight-week course of Police Officers Standards and Training at the Westmin- ster College in Salt Lake City, studying such things as finger printing, investigating accidents, ac-cidents, first aid, etc. She will also attend a two-week course at the University on crime prevention. She qualifed for her position posi-tion by passing all the tests in competition with 45 others, including two other women. She scored high in agility, written tests and oral board reviews. SHE LIVED in Centerville since 1951 until last year when she moved to Bountiful. She is divorced, has four children and two grandchildren. "I feel very lucky to have this opportunity. I think maybe some of the men resent me, but they have been very good. The Bountiful Police Department is a friendly place. The employees are cheerful and ready with a greeting. |
