' . . i One thing that has always impressed me about wild animals is their incredible awareness. Even when asleep they seem to have an eye and an ear open to the world about them. The world outside of town is often a harsh one. The chickadee who lets his alertness falter loses his life; ending up as supper of some creature yet more aware. Wild creatures are a reminder of how awake and alive to the world, we may become. ,,-,....,;,.;V.... . ' ' .. ; ' ... . . ' v .... m.- . '. - y i i Chickadees are among the friendliest of birds, they are comrrton in Utah wherever there are mountains and forests. With v , a bit of patience and a piece of walnut f you can often coax them into feeding from your hand. This bird is named for it's most prominent call, 'chicka-dee-dee-dee." Sit quietly in the woods and occasionally make chirping sounds by kissing the back of your hand and chickcdees and other small birds can often be lured to your feet. Contact between humans and the wild tolk is one of the most thrilling experiences I know. Mostly they have learned to fear and stay clear of humans, but by perservering sometimes one feels a startling closeness, a '4 we speak the same Janguage' sort of revelation. v v Once I met an old women who was living in a cabin in the backwoods of the Idaho panhandle. She had spent most of her ' - life living in wilderness settings and had an incredible rapport with wild birds. At times several different species would land . ; on her arms and shoulders at the same, time. I asked her what her secret was, for I could hardly believe what I was seeing. She replied, "Oh, it's no secret; Be patient, they'lLcome to you. You just have to talk to them and let them know you love them." Of course, what she said was true. .
