Show F From the Archives . yu rears Ago ... From the Wasatch Wave, Nov. 30, 1889 SURVEYING THE DUCHESNE John W. Young Preparing to Extend His Lines to the Duchesne Country John W. Young is surveying into the Duchesne district with a view to extending the Salt Lake and Eastern railroad down the Duchesne river to the Green, and thence up the White river into Colorado. The grades are very favorable and the country is as fine as any in the United States. The Midland wasted much money in surveying through Strawberry. It is claimed, instead of following up the main water routes and securing feasible grades; and Brother Young is getting in his work where it will do the most good. The intention is to connect with other railroads at Glenwood or else to strike through southwestern Colorado to connect with the New Mexico and Texas lines, thus giving Salt Lake another outlet to deep water. Spurs are to be built to the stone flagging quarries near Heber, and to Ashley; and when the line is broad-gauged, as is claimed it will be, the grade through Parley's Canyon is to be lowered to 2 percent, and under by rebuilding along the flats and tunnelling for perhaps one mile under the summit1 Tribune. 50 Years Ago ... . Jinks' Nelson advises that a thousand dollar expense account has already been started, which includes "broadcasting equipment" that will "tell the world" by word picture just what is going on in this famous western camp on that eventful night. The sympathy of every parent in America goes to the homes of those in Paisley, Scotland who suffered the loss of child in the building where a motion picture was being shown on the last day of the year. It surely cast a gloom over the city famed for its Paisley "shawls," and saddened the hearts of thousands who read the distressing news. The lesson to be derived should include wide spacious aisles and doors , of goodly numbers to warrant quick exit in time of alarm. "If Christ Came to Chicago" he couldn't please everybody, of course not, neither does the list of problematic appointees to city jobs as published last week meet the approval of everybody in Park City, but it is to be assumed that as a result of the conference held by officials who are to be in power, it was possibly agreed to by the majority in consultation, and as no others were present or asked to be present, let us presume for the present at least that they tried to be fair in the choice made, and such being the case let us wait results And again, recalling the fact that some names appeared that had not been heard of until published there is still a possibility that the list may not be the names confirmed next Monday cause we are reminded that "There's many a slip - tween sun-up and sun-down,' |
